JB, the note appears as thus:
' Nightie's face is always in shadow. It's an effect he creates himself. Do it like Wally Wood dramatic lighting, but from the front view the whole forehead is dark.'
EDIT: I'd like to correct myself. The page I'm referring to is dated '76, so it could very well be from around the time of #102.

That's a lot different, imo, from disappearing completely in shadow, Jonathon. Making shadows =/= vanishing inside them.

Being drawn as "in shadow" is not the same as being completely invisible, which is what Nightcrawler is shown to be in #'s 102-103. If Nightcrawler had been completely invsibile in the dark previously, which he was never shown to be, then Claremont/Cockrum would not have made a full-page production out of the discovery of this new power in 103.

Upon reading the FAQ on Mr Cockrum's site, (not sure if I am allowed to post a link) Mr Cockrum states that back when Nightcrawler was designed to be in the Legion, 'he also gained the ability to disappear into shadows.'
So that particular power, was intended for the character, by his own creator.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but didn't they retcon that particular ability of Nightcrawler's? Where did I read that? When they reprinted all that issue (102) in Classic X-Men, i for some reason get the feeling they corrected that to say that it 'appeared' like he idsappeared in shadows...I could be wrong...there is a first time for everything ;)

You're right. He has the ability to disappear in shadow. Basically, he's hard to see.
*apologies for the simplistic answer, it's way beyond bedtime.

From X-Men 103

That's about the size of it. While the image of Nightcrawler's eyes staring out of the blackness is certainly iconic, this is a darn weird power to suddenly discover.

"Dave's come up with this great bit for Nightcrawler," he said. "He's invisible when he's in shadow." "Oh?" said I, trying to picture this. "Does that mean he's invisible at night?" "No, why would he be?" "Night is when the whole night side of the Earth is in the Earth's shadow." "Oh, er, ah, harumph..." Never did get an answer. When I came to do UNCANNY I just took it as read, Kurt is "invisible in shadow" -- when it suits the story. ;-)

I'd love to get your thoughts on these, John:
***
As noted, characters get new powers because a
writer says "I want this."

He's not "hard to see". He's invisible. You can
see thru him. (See pages above.)

You're correct. Classic X-Men 10, which redoes
Uncanny X-Men 102, draws an outline around the
"invisible Nightcrawler" shot, so that he just seems
"nigh-invisible." (Claremont also used this issue to
excise the references to real-life historical events in
Storm's origin.)
In Classic X-Men 11, which redoes Uncanny 103,
Claremont eliminates the page with Nightcrawler's
hand going invisible. That whole scene is just gone.
