Isn't it fascinating how a few lines and shapes here and there are enough to suggest a fully rendered piece of art?

If you don't mind drawing with a mouse, you could use a photo or art editing program, or Paint (on a PC). I created my stick figure cover in Photoshop.

That's it, Matt.  I think it's a sign of strength in design that most of these covers can be recognizable from just a few lines.  Ultimately, it's these lines (as opposed to the rendering/drawing) which make the designs/compositions work.
