Great cliffhanger. Fantastic issue with an unfortunate cover because of
freaking Beyonder.
One of my commission ideas is a re-imagining the cover for this issue
sans Beyonder.

As a kid, I thought Flashback's scream was sorta scary...

The end of my all time favorite series. Too bad we'll never know what happened to Box after that brutal blow from the Hulk.
After rereading this series, a subtle plot point became more prominent to me now than it was to me in my youth. I always hated Omega Flight for helping to kill Guardian, but the inducer that Courtney used on them makes me wonder just how much blame they can accept.

Q's for JB
Did you talk to the group taking over AF about where you were going to leave your storyline? Did you change the ending of issue 28 because the next team wanted a specific starting point? For example: Did anyone say, "Have the Hulk smash Box because we have an idea about where to take that storyline..." --anything like that?

My first issue, and I couldn't wait to read more. It took me about a year to realize this was the best it was ever going to be. It was a work of marketing genius to make the book a secret wars II crossover for the handoff.

He did some good stuff with Shaman. Love the panel of him just thinking about all the mean things Talisman said to him. With all this good material, it should have been a walk in the park to write some expanding stuff to what JB has done. Just hearing the critiques I've heard about what happened after JB left the book.
I must add that reading and watching in anticapation of the Hulk in the issue, I was hoping it would continue where it left off in 314, but nuttin huni.

Oh, you missed that, Brian? It was really neat!
Box was still connected to the device that was holding open the alternate
dimension, and the electromagnetic energy released when the Hulk
smashed through his shoulder sent the Hulk back into that dimension,
along with Walter Langowski's soul.
Unfortunately, it destroyed the equipment that had opened the portal,
and knocked out Bochs and Jeffries. Heather, acting like the born leader
she is, knew she needed to reopen the alternate dimension immediately,
and dragged in Michael, despondent over Elizabeth's denouncement of
him, and snapped him back to action.
He reached into his pouch, and pulled out... a handful of dust. It was the
remains of Walter's body, brought back from the terrible loss at the eye
of the world. Instinctively, he threw it into the area where the portal had
manifested. On the other side, Walter's soul felt an incredible pull.
Walter quickly discovers that due to the energies released with the
damage to Box, he has phased into the Hulk's body. He races towards the
new interface, mystically opened by the dust of his physical form.
On the other side, the Flight experience a massive discharge of physical
and mystical energies, and two beings emerge: a fully restored Walter
Langowski, and a grey Hulk, back in his original form and size.
The savage Hulk smashes his way past the stunned Alphans, (and goes
off to have years of adventures (being restored to his green
behemothness, Bruce Banner, a life on the run from General Ross, the
Leader and a host of foes new and old) in a landmark run by John Byrne.)
With the dust still settling, Walter and Bochs realize that the gamma
radiation that he dosed himself with to become Sasquatch in the first
place tied him to the similarly irradiated form of the Hulk - some cosmic
force during the passage back through the dimensional gateway realized
that two, separate beings were trying to come back. It took the essence
of Langowski's real body from the dusty remains, and part of the lifeforce
of the Hulk, and reconstituted him.
Langowski's new body is exactly like the old, and still courses with the
gamma radiation that allowed him to trigger his transformation into
Sasquatch. Side benefit - since that particular great beast is dead, ol'
Walt can now call it's form without risking calling it, as well.
Aurora is thrilled. Northstar, less so.
The newly coalesced team (lead by Heather, with Sasquatch, Aurora, Puck
and Shaman and Box as core members) settles in to a completely
government-departmentless, genie-dwarf-less, Heather power-less and
super-suitedless existence on the island, fighting all sorts of villians new
and old, lovingly presented by creators who understand and care about
the characters.
It was great!

so sad that jb looks back at this run on alpha flight a totally different way then i do. its sad to see the creator of the team that made me fall in love with comics, did not hold this series as high as i did.
i was a 8 year old kid, who just spent his last dime on a comic book having no clue who alpha flight, or john byrne was, but page 1 had me hooked and guardian to this day, is my favorite looking character (not the current one, but the most unique costume in marvel) there was a issue, i believe it was a flashback, heather was sitting on the couch, mac was trying on the uniform, and she thought, "he looked great" that image will always be in my head.
if i was a millionaire i would pay marvel for the license (that they are letting waste away) and hire jb to recapture the magic that made me start reading comics, just wish they meant as much to him as they do to me.
