John, I'm a big fan of Elfquest and am presently re-reading it from the beginning. My question is how and when did you get to know her. I know you worked on an EQ project and even paid homage to her in your run on FF....

I was at a New York convention, around 1977ish, when Jo Duffy passed by
my table and asked if I had seen Wendy Pini there. I said sorry, but I would
not have known Wendy Pini if she'd bit me.

A few hours later, Jo came by my table again with a Hot Babe with her. "This
is Wendy Pini," Jo said. "Don't worry. She won't bite you!"

From this curious beginning, Wendy and Richard and I became friends and
eventually collaborators.

(The three panels you post above earned my much scolding from some
ELFQUEST fans. How dare I steal dialog from Richard and Wendy!
Who did I think I was. When I told Richard about this he immediately fired
off a letter for me to run in the lettercol, indicating how much he and Wendy
had enjoyed my little homage.)

Thanks John, It's always interesting to here how people behind the scenes meet (or don't) in the industry. Especially in the "Old" days (70s).

And I remember the story in the FF (242) thread about the feedback you received about those panels. Some times you just can't win! If it helps any I appreciated it.

Here are the Elfquest panels and the Pinis letter....

The first four volumes of ELFQUEST contain one of the most underrated stories in comics!

Indeed! I picked up the first year or so of ELFQUEST at a convention and
read them on the flight back home. Really good stuff.

It's a shame so many snobbish comic fans turn up their noses at the notion
of "elves" and thus deprive themselves of such a good read.

I never meant to snub it. I was introduced to it in grade school through a comic shop by my grandparents house in Pekin, IL. I tried it but couldn't get into it.

Of course I realize today that it is a comic institution. One of these days I will have to revisit it.

I revisit it every two or three years. To me the sign of great story telling is that when you re-read something like this, it's like visiting an old friend, and each time something you may have missed pops up. this to me is great story telling....AND great art.

I bought the first three color collections at a book fair in highschool. I read them, got to the end of the third one.(and the massive cliff hangr).

It was about a year before I found a copy of the fourth one and that year... really kind of sucked. I think Marvel was reprinting it in a family friendlier version that was also in color (though it was in four color instead of the painting like color in the collections). Of course as a monthly with bits of new art it did not help my year of pain any.

Before I bought the collections I had seen the original "larger than other comics"  B&W issues around, but the owner of the book store that carried them in Barton Creek Mall  wouldn't let me look at them because I was not yet 18.  Oddly he WOULD let me read/look at the Grendel, Cerebus, Badger, Grimjack, 2000AD, and Nexus comics.

Not long after that I found Austin Books. The owner of that place you let me read Cherry Pop Tart or anything. He just didn't care. That's where I first started reading B&W comics like Cerebus, Bone, and several Dark Horse titles..

For some reason I never really liked the stuff that came after the fourth ElfQuest collection as much as I did the first four.

On my first trip into a comic store (part old book store) a friend told me about Elfquest. I was sceptical about the non-standard size and it being in black and white. I purchased one issue for fun.

The next day I went back and bought every issue I could find and then had to wait for the next new issue. The story was fantastic. The art was incredible. That original run of Elfquest really was a wonderful find.

If you have not tried it, I would highly recommend it.

Was Elfquest aquired by DC comics? I have not seen new material in awile.

That original 20-issue run that was later reprinted in those beautiful color
volumes is one of my favorite comic runs, bar none. Great stuff.

Elfquest was licensed to DC for a few years, during which some new material and reprints of the old were released. The rights have returned to the Pinis.
