Which is why the First Amendment really does need that "except for
assholes" clause!

Talk about a slippery slope . . . .

Its why I am glad its not there.  I would prefer not to make any changes to the First Amendment (although I do sometimes think we'd be better off it stated "Freedom from Religion").

Holocaust denial is one of those issues that really causes me to examine
my own beliefs. My initial reaction to Holocaust deniers is that they have
a political reason for saying what they do. As Bruce said, I suspect that
they're lying; they know the Holocaust occurred, they're simply saying it
didn't in the hopes that they can eventually plant enough doubt to rewrite
history.

But then I have to wonder whether there are people out there who think
the exact same thing about me, when I reject the existence of things like
alien visitations, or Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness Monster.

Why, after all, would I believe in the Holocaust if I didn't believe in these
other things? Certainly the same kinds of evidence are presented to
support all of them: original documents, photographic evidence, and
thousands upon thousands of first-hand accounts. So if the evidence is
similar in kind, and arguably even in volume, wherein lies the distinction?

The obvious answer is that it's the quality of the evidence that matters.
But just as there's no such thing as a Bigfoot photo that's bad enough to
dissuade the believer, it's hard to imagine any evidence that wouldn't
look false to someone who has convinced himself the Holocaust is a
hoax.

Tangentially-related, I just ran across this link that has amazing color photography from LIFE magazine of Nazi Germany.

(Warning--one pic about halfway-down has female nudity, so NSFW applies).

the one picture about half way through, with Hitler in an easy chair, laughing with the young lady (Eva Braun?) is what I was talking about upthread. At that second, he's enjoying some sort of joke, not being a megalomaniac running all over Europe. That's the insidious part of evil; is anyone evil all the time? Right that second Hitler was just a guy enjoying a laugh.

Many years ago the TV show Quantum Leap had Sam leap into the body of a Klansman. Of course there was the requisite "I hate this" from Sam. But what interested me was that this klansman was married and had a kid, and a job of some sort. So I remember thinking, did the wife marry him for his hood and cross-burning? While these traits may make this person an easy one to sketch out, that can't be the totality of a character. And that's what's always interested me in evil characters. At some point they're not evil - (Well in the Red Skull's case I'd make an exception). They're people, who happen to be capable of doing very bad things.

But it's the everyday evil I really worry about. Like the neo-Nazis and Klan and their ilk. And Holocaust deniers as well. I worked with a lady whoe grandfather had been in Patton's army and she said the only thing he never talked about was liberating a death camp, she couldn't remember which one. She said all he would do when the subject came up was cry and change the subject. Yeah, I'm sure that's fake.

JB

What comes first-the hand or the cube? We see so much 'art' were it looks like something just doesn't fit like it's supposed too-but that really looks like the skull is holding the cube.

Also that mouth is just fantastic. The teeth...everything. That's one scary SOB.

••

That's not Eva. Could be one of his many "girlfriends". Hitler was pretty
much the poster boy for power being an aphrodisiac.

Depends on the shot/pose. In this case, the Cube.
