He's the biggest moster of the lot.
Love this one, too. Very creepy, and the shadows caused by the Cube are outstanding.

OH!!! MY!!!!!! DOG!!!!!!!!! The Ludwick collection gets another suh-weet addition!
This here is precisely why the "lost" Stern/JB Cap vs. Red Skull story is one that I mourn the absence of a lot. There sort of NEEDS to be a Cap / Red Skull reckoning as told by the Stern/JB team up. It'd be sooo awesome in sooooo many ways.

The Red Skull is one of those villains who could be iconic for Marvel in his own way as Captain America would be an iconic hero. I have the Essential volume in which the Skull got possession of the Cosmic Cube for the first time and those scenes still stand out to me. What works best about it was that the whole story arc only took about half the year (in monthly installments) to unfold.
The same story today would probably take over a year to be told and even then it wouldn't be completed due to lags in production, delays in release, etc...
I definitely see in JB a lot of examples of what I could use as an aspiring comicbook artist here, such as the way to lay out the rubble in the background, the creases and folds in Red Skull's uniform and the use of foreshortening on his figure. This picture certainly tells the story without the use of words or successive panels...

Clint
Are you transitioning away from monsters and to other characters? I know your collection is themed but themes change, sometimes because of a lack of characters. My collection of commissions from John has gone through many several transitions. As orginially conceived, it was to be a Byrne Batman theme, then it became a Byrne JLA theme. Now it is all my favorite DC and Marvel comic character takes by John
I hope your collection continues and flourishes and I hope you continue to commission characters that others don't think of. You've introduced me to so many already. Thanks

It is difficult to imagine something as "big" as the Skull gaining possession
of the Cosmic Cube being allowed, today, to be anything less than a year
long crossover. This was something with which I began to have problems
when doing FOURTH WORLD at DC. The New Gods, I felt, required BIG
stories, but the stories I came up with kept being looked upon as crossover
events by the Higher Ups. That was how GENESIS happened, for instance,
and in the process became a complete mess and a diluted version of the
story I wanted to tell.

What we ALL used to call "Tuesday". When I got into the Biz, and for many
years after, there was no shame in telling a story in the most compact way
possible. Look at the Dark Phoenix Saga, for instance. That title refers not
to a single story, but to an arc that encompassed several stories that were
complete unto themselves.* That used to be the way they were all done!
*Well, except for Chris' habit of revisiting stories we all thought were done!

Fantastic piece of art, JB! One of my favorite commissions to date.
The Red Skull is one of my favorite villains, in the sense that he's so easy to root against. Unlike many other bad guys, there's nothing sympathetic about the Red Skull - he's pretty much the embodiment of pure evil.
I think he's best when his Nazi roots are emphasized, with all the hatred and prejudice that entails. My favorite Red Skull storyline is probably the one leading into Captain America #300 where the dying Red Skull ages Captain America so they can have one last fight to the death.

The cube looks great. The downward angle is dramatic and the details in the uniform are fantastic. So many adjectives I'm starting to feel like Stan Lee.
