It is difficult to imagine something as "big" as the Skull gaining possession of the Cosmic Cube being allowed, today, to be anything less than a year long crossover.
Which is why the "Sinestro Corps War" was such a pleasant surprise. It was not a multi-book crossover. It took place between the two Green Lantern books (and truthfully you could have read only one of the two and you'd have been satisfied) and was just a great old fashioned self-contained story. Looking at just the "core books" it was probably only a three or four issue (per title) event. It was a story that seemed to slip past DC Editorial which didn't realize until the story was almost over that it could have been a great "crossover event." But I suspect it was great because it was not line wide event. Its why I am nerveous about what "Blackest Night" is evolving into now that it has been designated a "crossover event."
Edited to add: LOVE, the commission too!

in his own way as Captain America would be an iconic hero. I have the Essential volume in which the Skull got possession of the Cosmic Cube for the

about it was that the whole story arc only took about half the year (in
monthly installments) to unfold."
And unless I'm misremembering very badly this while also while Cap was still in ToS and each installment was some 10-12 pages or so each... so counting the amount of pages involved even less than half a year, so to speak.

Indeed. It'd probably run through at LEAST every Cap and Avengers related title and then you probably have a 3-7 issues Cosmic Cube mini and a Captain America: Cosmic Cube one shot, and a Red Skull: Cosmic Cube one shot... and a S.H.I.E.L.D.: Cosmic Cube one shot, and so on and so forth. At the end of the day meaning you'd HAVE to read a gazillion comics to get "the" story. And that would be that year's Marvel story, kinda. Sad, sad, sad.

The Red Skull is one of my favorite villains, in the sense that he's so easy to
root against.

Nazis make the BEST villains! It's a pity so many of today's readers are so
ignorant of history that the Nazis are slipping into "old and boring" or,
worse, being degraded by skinheads and Illinois Nazis.
The Nazis are so horrifying and so scary because they were REAL!

There was a story Roger Stern and I wanted to do in CAPTAIN AMERICA.
We'd asked if we could have Cap go after the American Nazi Party, but we'd
been told no, that would be too controversial. Then the Black Panther went
after the Klan, and we stormed into Shooter's office demanding our story be
allowed.
We'd come up with this, basically: Cap fights the American Nazis, but in the
process realizes that as a true American, as a representative of everything
Good about America, he must defend their rights as much as anyone else's.
The First Amendment does not include an "except for assholes" clause.
Crushed by this realization, Cap begins to walk away, and our George
Lincoln Rockwell avatar laughs at him. "Ha! Captain America! What a hollow
shell you are! I spit on your ideals! I spit on your flag! I spit on YOU!"
Hand on the doorknob, Cap slowly turns back to face the guy. "Oh, well," he
smiles, "if you want to make this personal…"
And he closes the door, with the readers on the outside, and in the next
couple of panels we see the door buckling outwards and plaster falling off
the walls.

It's kind of strange to see a sentence griping that Nazi's are being degraded! (I know that's not how you meant it, btw... that you were using degrade in the sense of scaled down, rather than brought into low esteem).
As for this commission: the eyes have it! Much like with Dr Doom, all the evil and madness is conveyed in the burning eyes. And, boy, this Red Skull looks pretty mad and evil; like he's entranced by the power of the cube.
Good depiction of an SS uniform, and that cube fairly glows with its cosmic power. Nice (and difficult) foreshortening.

Wait, they had sex?
Kidding aside, that sounds like an issue I would have loved to see.

Clint Are you transitioning away from monsters and to other characters? I know your collection is themed but themes change, sometimes because of a lack of characters.
Ari, hopefully my next JB commission will be alittle BIGGER. This of course after another trip to the Middle East. My dream JB commission has about 12 characters, so it will be awhile!

The First Amendment does not include an "except for assholes" clause. +++ DeMatteis and Zeck did it. Except for the cool ending.

Three more comments -
JB also holds the 'King of Skulls' title. Terrax, burning Guardian, and Red Skull in Batman/Captain America are the examples.
Civilians think my original comic art are prints. sniff.
I think JB's Nazi machinery comes from the same alien and robot creativity vein. All cool, organic, and unique.
