50 comics for just 1? That sounds like a terrible deal for retailers.

Send me 50 pre-1990 Marvel Comics and I'll send you a polybagged copy of X-Force #1.

And did I mention that there's a special trading card inside that polybag?  Act now, while supplies last!  A deal this great can't stay on the table forever.

********************************

Especially when those 50 books cost the retailers $100.

That makes it an even worse deal.

Being Devil's Advocate, the merit in this scheme for retailers is if they've got 50 books that aren't going to sell (or will take a long time to sell), they can cash them out for a book that they might have an easier time flipping.

After all, will there be that much of a market for those extra issues of Darkest Night once the trades appear?

It's good until I get 50 copies of U.S.-1 and the Willow movie adaptation.

But even then, I'm still coming out ahead.

Spending $100 on a variant cover of a fairly current comic seems pretty strange to me.

When I'm in a comics shop (and I haven't been for about two years now) the only thing I can see myself paying $100 for is the 20 Oz Dr Pepper cooler and that probably would cost me well over $100.

Even if I was still buying comics I'd probably spend $100 on two of those DVD's with every issue of a series up to 2005 or several volumes of essentials style reprints and I'd still have enough change left over for a burrito at Chipotle.

As a rule, even when I was buying comics (and hating them) I didn't feel any particular attraction to stuff that happened to have Cable, Dead Pool, Venom, Vengeance, Spawn, or a Gen 13 character on the cover.

I don't even buy Japanese toys or gaming miniatures anymore. I rarely buy anime and when I do it's in those 'full series' budget collections for $35. Sometimes I get THOSE used for half price.

Take away video games I guess I'd spend most of my money on used paperbacks, soda, fast food, and gas.

I guess I am becoming a cheap ass.

when you see them all in the same sentence it's actually a little frightening.

But you did forget Cable and Youngblood.

Not that they aren't forgettable.

Youngblood ... not precisely my cup of tea.
