A good shot of JB's "Barney Rubble" should be added to the gallery!

I'm thinking Al's going to wait until the end of the USA-Canada Olympic Gold medal hockey game before he dies.

It's a shame we can't commission a picture of Barney at the gravel pit with a hidden Ben Grimm in it!

Since it was brought up a recent commission I've been scouring JB's drawings looking for Mr. Rubble.

••

And right there is why I stopped doing it, several years back!

The thing about an "in-joke" is that it should remain, well, "in". It should not be widely known, and most especially it should not become something people actually look for! I stopped adding Barney when I found out people were actually interrupting their reading every time they came to a pile of rubble, searching for Barney.

Now, Barney shows up only in commissions, and only if I am asked to include him!

Was it Stan Lee that gave you guys the great nicknames? Were you always "Jocular John Byrne" and did you like the nicknames?

Also when you worked for Marvel, did you go to the Marvel office to work or have you always worked at home and brought finished work in?

Has anyone asked for a commission of just Barney Rubble?

Thanks. I'd never seen one.

No more Barney!?  I hope you still hide your granddaughter Nina's name in all your drawings, though.

Stan originated the nicknames, but he was no longer the one handing them out by the time I joined Marvel. I think it was Chris Claremont who hung my original nickname on me -- "Jarring". Roger Stern decided that was hardly a fun name, and changed it to "Jocular", which I was happy to continue.

Roger also spent a lot of energy -- all wasted -- trying to impress upon Chris that "Cheerful" was not alliteration for "Chris".

A while back, a fan asked me "Why don't you do in-jokes anymore?"

"I do," I replied.

"I don't see them."

"That's because you're not 'in'."

Huh.  I learned two things from reading Claremont comics:  "Phyrric victory" was when the X-Men clearly defeated Magneto and forced him back into hiding, and how to properly pronounce "Keerful."

Now I'm only down to one thing I learned.

Funny!  That reminds me how it annoys me when a comic character stutters like this, "T-T-This way..."  Shouldn't it be "Th-th-this way"...?
