Zaladane?•• Yup! And this is annoying, since I had to look up reference on Garrok, not having internalized that character. I guess I flipped to a page Zaladane wasn't on!

Segueing briefly into the time travel thread, it would be somewhat gratifying to step thru a wormhole to 1977, with this piece tucked under my arm, to show my younger self that it will, in the long result, work out okay!++ How would your younger self feel with how long you stayed on the book? Or how you decided to leave? •• He'd be disappointed -- until I told him he'd be leaving to write and draw the Fantastic Four!

Did you already have the offer for the FF before you actually left UXM?

Sorta kinda. I was going to be WRITING the FF, with Bill continuing to draw. Then when I dropped X-MEN, it seemed logical that I should draw the FF, too -- especially since Bill and Doug were eager to devote all their energies to MOON KNIGHT.

Ah. I remembered the part about the scripting, but didn't remember the time-frame. Did you have to do any kind of writing "try-out?" Were they willing to simply hand their flagship title over to an unproven comics writer?

I wasn't really "unproven". I'd been doing the lion's share of the plotting on UNCANNY for about a year. Shooter, whose decision it was to give me the FF, knew my command of the English language was sufficient to the task of putting words in the balloons and captions! It wasn't a seamless transition, of course. Took me about a year to purge myself of the many Claremontian ticks and mannerisms I'd picked up working with him.

Thanks for the back-and-forth. I love getting these little insights into the workings of my favorite mags.

I finally got around to re-scanning the Caliban sketch. Because of my original Smurf-sized scanner I had to scan it in two parts which led to some confusion. Enjoy.

My beef with this is: Caliban should really be the name of a troglodyte, evolutionary throwback and this guy looks too...delicate.
