I get a Simonson vibe from that last panel.

••

I can see that. Not the worst thing that could happen, huh?

Incidentally, a bit of good news, assuming COLD WAR does well enough to continue after the first four.

One of my concerns has been IDW wanting four issue arcs, which make for better trade paperbacks. I was worried that some of my stories -- the third one, especially -- might have to be padded to make four issues, which would throw off the pacing, but Chris Ryall has said I can go to three, and even do a single issue story to make up the "fourth". So that means I can make these stories just as lean and mean as I want them to be!

I like Chris Ryall more and more knowing he is giving you every opportunity to tell whatever story you see fit. How does it feel to have a sandbox to play in essentially without boarders?

I love that page!  I hope this book does well since I want to read as many stories as you can do, JB!

One other thing I really like about it (and JB's work) is that I can tell exactly what is going on! Not intending to slam any nuDC fans, I promise, but as I tried to read a good dozen or more of the new titles-- the heavy colors, the occasional computer effect, etc.-- made me just want to put them down. I think my eyes are getting too old for most comics.

I like JB's clarity, not to mention his skill at sequential storytelling. Some titles I would have no idea what is happening without the word balloons. Here you can tell exactly what is happening.

Freedom is a wonderful thing! But in regards to taking more pages to tell your stories, wouldn't that, in some ways, permit freedom too?

I mean there is rarely a NEED for a double-page spread, but there are plenty of reveals and reversals in your stories that could make double-page spreads work while keeping or even increasing the pace.

(That's not even to mention the way Frank Miller has seemed to find a way to make any moment of a story worthy of a double-page spread. I find his use of them keeps his pace brisk, but they're not suited for every kind of story.)

You're describing double page spreads used as padding. I use them when I feel they will provide maximum impact (see JURASSIC PARK - THE DEVILS IN THE DESERT), but not every "reveal and reversal" is worth a spread.
