I have to wonder what kind of heads up JB had as to what the wording was going to be like for this page.•• None at all. By this point, Chris and I were working "Marvel Style", plot, pencils, script. He was supposed to be writing off my art, not me off his script. I mean, seriously -- if I had KNOWN Chris was going to lay that much text onto the page, don't you think I would have drawn something appropriate? Again, as noted above, this is an all to typical example of my having drawn something that would take a heartbeat, and Chris writing several heartbeats worth of dialog.

Pick up the ESSENTIAL. Cheaper than back issues -- plus, Chris and I get royalties! One of the few ESSENTIALS I've picked up...featuring not only the Marvel Premiere and Iron Fist runs, but also IF's Marvel Team-Up issues of the time and the JB/CC "Power Man and Iron Fist" launch. Good, good stuff!

JB,The IF #11, p2 original art posted on the previous page of this thread has two background characters near the bottom that appear to be Jim Shooter & Roger Stern. I've also noticed a few other instances from this period of your work where both of them and other fellow pros (including yourself) appear to be included in such scenes. I'm curious as to what your relationship was like with Jim Shooter in this time period?

I read the ESSENTIAL IRON FIST volume after seeing lots of JB commissions on the forum. So reading it in B&W was like seeing a commission come to life. The mood of the book perfectly suits the B&W format.
I hope I didn't sound dismissive of the coloring job on the original issues in my previous post. the coloring is a good job and no disrespect to the colorist. But after you've experienced the story in B&W, seeing those pages in color looks like "Iron Fist the Technicolor Musical" instead of "Iron Fist the Living Weapon"

Mark McMurray, take a look at the following issue's splash page with Captain America. Cap is looking over a computer console showing recent news items. Shooter and Stern appear again... showing what happened after the scene you describe.

I love JB's run on Iron Fist! It certainly holds that nostalgic magic for me, because it was right when I first started 'Collecting' comics and hunting for back issues.
I remember copying that splash page to issue #5 that JB posted upthread. I drew it with a sharpie marker and I was so proud of it at the time. (I must've been 12-ish???) I think I kept it, I may have to dig it up.

I remember finding #14 (with Sabretooth) when I was a kid and I was happy just to have it but these days that issue would be way too expensive for a little kid to own.
As a matter of fact back in 1995 I paid $40 for the first appearance of the K'un L'un Kid (in Marvel Premiere #15) which is the most I've ever spent on a single issue in my life.

Classic! I like how Chris also added ellipses, just to slow down the thought processes.
Normally I think you're a little hard on Chris, but this time it reads like William Shatner speaks:
"Man.... on fire escape.... didn't see him...no time.... to parry his attack!"
I refer you back to the Simpsons parody you mentioned about no time to dodge only time to think....

Q for JB and the Forum: What's your opinion of Frank Chiaramonte's inking; in general and over JB's work in particular. He was far from a favorite of mine. I tended to believe that his inks "muddied up" most pencillers' work; particularly Curt Swan's (whom he inked for many a year.). I can't help but wonder how JB's earlier work would've looked with, IMHO, a better inker.

I found Dan Green to be a more pleasing match for JB's art on Iron Fist than Mr. Chiaramonte.
