The fact that Boris is 26 now, and that Bagley was on ASM back close to 20 years ago now, I'll give the ape-ing a pass. Non-superhero art gets a turned nose on this thread many a time, and he showed us where his roots are in a few posts.

Perhaps Ronald thought you were being sarcastic Carmen, because the coloured figures of Spider-Man, Black Cat, Venom, Hulk, etc. that Boris did are all lifted out of books drawn by Mark Bagley and Dale Keown. So those figures don't just have a "Bagley vibe", but rather ARE Mark Bagley's. Hence the potential sarcasm.
There is no denying Mark's influence on Boris' pencil work. He uses the same shape for eyes, same shadow patterns, etc. I would swear that head study WAS done by Mark Bagley.

Yeah, Carmen, I think the fact that you used "vaguely" to qualify your statement...I'd say more like EXACTLY.
This.
As a long-time fan of Bagley's work, I instantly recognized almost every single one of those figures and poses from the books I'd originally seen them in.
However, perhaps there's something being lost in translation. Is Boris showing his coloring skills? Or is he saying he drew those? There was definitely a lightbox involved if it's the latter.

Not being too familiar with Mark Bagley's comics since I only browsed through a few issues during the 1990s and didn't buy any, I couldn't recognize them from particular panels within those titles. I only recognized his style. So, if Boris is tracing anything for copying, I guess your point is made. Why not suggest to him something like picking up a "How-To" book that gives him the basics of comicbook art and storytelling, like my folks did for me as a kid? I can suggest Stan Lee & John Buscema's How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way, and a series of others (including more recent ones by Echo and Trouble In Paradise writer/artist Terry Moore).

Boris, I said the images were "lifted" from Dale and Mark's work and not traced. I didn't want to presume how you did your work, but it is obvious you had seen the images from Dale and Mark prior to putting pencil, ink and color to the page. I'm deeply familiar with the first Black Cat figure because I inked it from a Xerox Mark gave me a very long time ago and my inks were used in a poster promoting Mark's appearance at our local LCS.
Getting inspiration from Dale and Mark is great. I grew up near Mark and he certainly inspired me. I now live in Ottawa. Oddly enough, that is where Arcel Comics discovered Dale Keown. I recognize their work and style as many others do. They are great artistic role models, but I would consider those figures to be you copying Mark and Dale. Not you drawing with their "style". I look forward to seeing your work progress.
