Steve Gerber would probably approve.

I haven't posted anything in ages but I was futzing around with a new brush ink pen today. I have arthritis in my drawing hand which makes "regular" inking a shaky, frustrating chore. But here we are with a black and white Red Skull.

I ran across my old DC single page contest entry from several months back...and suddenly remembered my intention of posting it here.

DC editors alas...were not impressed. :(

When I draw, everything seems to STATIC, so STIFF and LIFELESS.  When I see artwork by my favorite artists (Byrne, Perez, Simonson, , etc.) the artwork MOVES, sometimes it's so good it's almost "ALIVE" as far as lines on paper go --- the characters have real WEIGHT, I can even "feel" them putting all their weight on one leg sometimes.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or perhaps easier, what they are doing RIGHT?

Thanks,
Marc

Marc, not sire if this applies to your work or not, but I notice a lot of the better comic art has a dynamism that comes from 2 (maybe more  things) one is the angle of the pose, the other is the "moment" of the pose chosen.
Are you picking the most dynamic "moment" in the movement? Are you doing it at an exciting angle?

Mark Rand - don't feel bad, they didn't like mine, either!

As it turned out, they hired someone who'd been working pro, anyway, so the whole thing was a scam of sorts.

Ah well.

Thanks Ronald. That's funny about the contest winner being a pro. I hadn't heard that until your post. I guess any other pro's who entered shouldn't feel too embarrassed in that case.

The most fascinating thing about this project, is the wildly varied ways artists interpreted the script. I particularly like the way you solved the opening cell tower panel. With all that detail, it'd be interesting to see how your page would look fully inked. Sadly my inking skills are pretty much non-existent.

Here are a couple pages I attempted to draw a couple years ago, thinking I would publish an independent comic. Thankfully, I looked at my worked and realized I was nowhere near ready to publish anything.

But what the hell, I'll post this anyway.

It was my first unsuccessful try at fully digital art using Manga Studio 5.

and cartoon character I remember seeing.
