Veli! It's good to see "you" again! Funny that we both post on this thread for the first time at (around) the same time! Check out my WONDER WOMAN a few posts above!

David, very nice Mar-Vell sketch! Very professional looking! The only thing I'm not sure about is the muscles on his right leg. Couple muscles on the thigh and calf that are big and round where I don't think they should be big and round. But I like your basic style very much.

(Robert, I removed your image.  I don't think your published work is appropriate for this thread. Please review the Forum Decorum thread in the Announcements section for the JBF guidelines.  Thanks so much -- Tim)

Messin' around with Thor and hulk with ol' Loki stirrin' up the pot…

I like this composition and plan on revisiting it at a later time with finished pencils.  My buddy Teon starting inking the sketch just for kicks.

The historical subjects made an itch that I had to scratch again this weekend. Roman soldier overlooking a wall facing into the wilderness, wondering how he's supposed to spot the barbarian hordes roaming the forest beyond. Kind of inspired by the cover to that Wishbone Ash album Argus.

Jerry Ordway drew the cover to Superman Man Of Steel TPB Vol.1 even if nothing inside contains his art. I own 3 of his covers (vols,3,4,6) but was not interested in 1 because he didn't draw the interiors. I imagined: What if JB drew it? I used JB's West Coast Avengers 51 cover as the layout to this imaginary cover, and changed the faces trying to "ape" JB's style - even down to the way the margins are lined up (I should know as I am proud owner of 2 JB commissions!).  Here is what I drew:

Trying to draw this was an art lesson. I realized:

-JB's feathering is always dynamic and flowing, hardly any straight repetitive lines giving it a very organic feel

-JB's work (especially the more recent ones) uses fewer strokes/lines while still conveying the story clearly because he know when to use them, how to use them, and how thick to draw them.

Since I am an amateur artist, I think the result I came up with was quite sterile, lifeless, and no understanding of line weights.  I actually had to restroke the pens to add lineweight, while JB can achieve the same result with one stroke with a thicker pen perfectly places.

I recommend any aspiring artist out there to try to draw, or copy, or even lightbox JB's work.  When you do, you'll come up with a greater appreciation of his methods and realize why no one has come close to matching his style (which is also impossible to ape successfully!).
