Thanks Joe! What a weird issue for them to start with. I wish they would get She-Hulk up there too.

What a weird issue for them to start with.

It's a fun story, introducing brand-new characters, and it's self-contained.  Probably as good a one-off story from West Coast Avengers as any other from JB's run.

Can you think of a reason why he would want you off those books JB?

It seems that, until the very end of Shooter's tenure at least, there was more stability in editorial. Which seems odd to me given Shooter's rep. Creators like JB, Walt Simonson, Roger Stern, etc, seem to run into problems during the DeFalco era. They certainly never again had such lengthy runs at Marvel as they did during Shooter's reign.

Kinda makes you wonder how things would have played out in the industry had Shooter lasted an extra year.

If he'd been fired a year earlier, JB would have stayed on FF.

'Nuff said.

Mebbe. I was beginning to feel a bit worn out after almost six years on the FF, Mike Carlin, then the editor, and I were talking about my maybe stepping back and having someone else draw the book for a while. We considered JRjr.

But at the same time, Shooter was constantly holding Carlin's feet to the fire, finding "faults" in the book that he did not seem to notice in other titles. (There was a CLASSIC story about the coloring that Carlin told me, which I wish I could pass along, but since it would be hearsay. . . )

Eventually, it was a combination of elements that pushed me off FANTASTIC FOUR, most notably it becoming obvious that, despite Mike Hobson, his boss, having wished me well on the project*, Shooter was never going to tolerate my working on Superman at the same time.

JB: Eventually, it was a combination of elements that pushed me off
FANTASTIC FOUR, most notably it becoming obvious that, despite
Mike Hobson, his boss, having wished me well on the project*, Shooter
was never going to tolerate my working on Superman at the same time.

SER: Business can be petty, but this strikes me as very BAD business
as a result of pettiness.

Hobson had a logical reaction: Your work on SUPERMAN would
certainly have aided Marvel if you were still on FF and HULK.

Were I publisher at the time, I would have done all I could to keep you
from DC (in a positive sense) but once that was off the table, losing you
entirely is classic cutting off my nose to spite my face.

I got the impression a lot of great talent left Marvel for DC around this
time. How much of that was related to Shooter, I wonder? If so, that is
an awful legacy to have,

It would be interesting to see how much talent left Marvel in the latter days of the Jim Shooter years vs. the Tom DeFalco years. Even though I was a teenager, I noticed the quality of many Marvel books going downhill when DeFalco was EIC.

Based on Shooter's taste in artists (both at Marvel and at Valiant) it does make one wonder if his continued EIC-ship would have prevented the Image era from ever happening. For good or ill.
