Does anyone else feel that the human torch would be an especially difficult
character to write? Great visual but against normal humans his power seems
almost guaranteed to kill or severely injure. I can't really think of any
characters who's power is so lethal i.e. with no real off setting. The Hulk
can choose to not hit hard but fire can't choose not to burn you.

I guess if the Human Torch was like a cop fighting crime with a flamethrower, the results would be pretty gruesome; I imagine though that the Torch has such specialized control over his flames that it's no one is in danger unless he wants them to be.

What Thom wrote. The Human Torch has been shown to have complete control over his flame (and even other flame), that I don't see any real problems.

Well regarding the original Human Torch. He was able to create shapes with his flames. I would think if he could do that. He would be able to control the how hot the flames got as well.   If he was able to control how long it burns. The fire could dissipate upon contact.

With regards to Johnny Storm. If he can get hot enough to go Supernova. He should be able to go the other direction.

Are you saying he should be able to go all-out Iceman?

THis makes me think of something else…..could pyro control the human
torch's flame? I don't think it was ever tried. Would love to hear from anyone
on this of course but especially John.

Paul, Pyro could likely control the Human Torch's flame, but so could it work the other way 'round. The thing is, Johnny can generate flame naturally, while Pyro has to have the flame thrower to create flame. I'd say Johnny would make quick work of Pyro, as Johnny also has more experience and all-around abilities.

So, too, can Johnny Storm. In the Silver-Age, Stan and Jack had Johnny do some pretty cool stuff with his powers. JB continued with some of that, but most later writers whittled it down to Johnny simply lobbing fireballs, flying, and going super nova occasionally, and not much more. Still, I haven't read anything to suggest Johnny lost those abilities over the years.

It would be interesting to see Pyro face off against Johnny, though the collateral damage would be unbelievable (and a limit on Johnny going all out, which Pyro would exploit).

Although if Johnny has stronger control over flame, it'll be a short fight--he snuffs Pyro's flamethrowers and game over.

These Pyro vs. Human Torch scenarios feel a bit like trying to see if Namor and Aquaman can drown one another.

Stan and Jack would sometimes play the Torch as Green Lantern. Jack seemed to forget that was flames he was dealing with.
