Great job unearthing this one William!
I have a good collection of JB's published work (I'd like to think 90%+) but I love to see new old stuff.

How in the world did you track this down?
What issue number of Monster Times is it in?

Twice Told Tale: In my early days, I resolved to sign myself only "John". I did so on much of my fanzine work, but one day at a con I met Tony Tollin for the first time, and he told me he was getting credited for that work. I took another look at my stylized "John" and realized that, yeah, it did look a whole lot like "Tollin".

Thus was born the squashed spider which, with variations, has been my signature ever since I turned Pro.
