It’s all politics. We already know how Trumpf would react when a lengthy investigation results in no criminal referrals; Mueller Report. A criminal referral was eminent from the start. One can only hope DoJ is farther along than anyone thinks.

One thing I can't believe about Trump is him saying he was a better president than Washington and Lincoln were.
******
That’s actually quite easy to believe.

Trumf lives in his own world, where everything he says is true. Of course he’s a better president than Lincoln, and if you don’t believe him, ask him!

He did say he’s done more for black people than Lincoln.

He didn't say he'd done more GOOD, just, y'know, "more".

Eric I fully expect the DOJ to indict. Such an indictment will turn Trump into martyr in the eyes of his followers. I think the indictment will backfire, and act to galvanize his supporters. I believe the intent of these actions is to deny Trump the ability to become president again. Time will tell if it succeeds. It would be wild if he was elected again, and pardoned himself.

Republicans have already turned Trump into a martyr. Remember, if the deep state can execute a search warrant for stolen classified materials on the Rightful Anointed President For Life, it can happen to anyone.

Trump's legacy is going to be Right-Wingers who lose elections claiming that the elections were rigged and refusing to concede and/or filing lawsuits. Just look at Kari Lake, for example.

Brennan, I can see the possibility of the DoJ indictment backfiring, but ultimately the indictment and conviction will be about educating the public. I think the Jan 6 committee did a good job of educating everyone about what was done improperly. How many of those people that attacked the US Capitol even knew the process of certifying the election before that day? Trumpf will be indicted, tried and perhaps it will take a VERY long time for the case to end. But all of these things are going to happen. I think more people are starting to realize they might have been wrong about Trumf's ability to bring positive change.

I can't agree on the education aspect. I think the country is hopelessly polarized. When those who support the former president look at the FBI/Twitter revelations they're only more convinced Trump was right, and are more strident in their support of the man.
I live in a midwestern city. In the city you don't see any Trump signs, or any Biden ones, but when I take a drive maybe 10-20 miles outside the city, all I see are Trump signs. They haven't came down since the last election. It is almost a religion for these folks.

Its a cult, Brennan.
I see all sorts of F**K BIDEN (not censored) stuff (including a bumper sticker that says "and f**k you too, if you voted for him"), Lets Go Brandon, Trump 2020 and 2024 signs, flags and bumper stickers, and pro Trump shirts around here. I've also seen anti-Democrat door mats. Funnily enough, I haven't seen any MAGA hats in ages. I'm a Doordasher, and whenever I deliver to someone with any of that crap, it digusts me. Back when Biden had COVID, I actually had a customer tell me he hoped it killed him. Ugh. (I won't deliver to that a-hole again.)
The Presidential Records Act should be enough to stop Trump from running. But I've seen online posts from idiots who think its a forgone conclusion he's going to win if he runs, even if DeSantis enters the race. That is beyond delusional. DeSantis will win the GOP nomination, and if he's actually able to run Trump will either form his own (hopefully short lived) party or run as an independent, then still whine `FRAUD!' when he comes in third or fourth depending on what the new Forward party does.
