It's a legitimate form of art going way back over centuries and across many cultures. It has been banned in various times and places too though. At one time I took it as men making fun of women (ala Python and that whole pantomime music hall thing), or even men pretending to be women making fun of men, both of which could be genuinely funny, but I didn't really 'get' it as an art form until I saw Divine in that John Waters film Polyester; what a great performance, he was an excellent actress! Craig Russell was also amazing!
Maybe the apparently still alive Anita Bryant contingent among Republicans should check out the history of The Stonewall Inn in NYC and who led the charge for a gay right movement that went national from there!
Tiki torch processions with heil Hitler salutes and chanting about Jews = a-ok, guy in a dress with big eyelashes = urgent and existential threat!
