Hey JB- was there a flash of inspiration moment where you came up with the Great Beasts for ALPHA FLIGHT... and you had Sasquatch already created... and you thought "Hm... peanut butter and chocolate"...?

I'm wondering when you made this his "secret origin," so to speak.

Thanks!

Once I came up with the Great Beasts—one of my most seamless moments of creation, btw—it seemed a pretty natural flow to have Sasquatch be one of them. One of those “what if” thoughts that instantly exploded in all directions.

That's really cool! I liked finding that the explanation--he exposed himself to gamma rays (possibly contaminated with some cosmic radiation) to replicate the Hulk's creation--turning out not to be the whole story was a great twist.

Thanks!

It also ended up being a nice way to create some drama between two members of the team who had little interaction previously.

Loved the Great Beasts, was kind of bummed out at Walter's fate, but it was a neat piece of work to make it all fit together. Loved those shortish origin back-up stories that Alpha Flight used to have. Shaman was probably my favourite origin story, and it was another neat piece of work to interweave him into Snowbird's origin.

The greatest switcheroo in comics. Never saw it coming, and left another
Saskatchewan sized hole in my heart. Thanks, JB.

I was all in on the Great Beasts and loved the Tanaraq angle, still do! Sasquatch's origin and subsequent truth to his existence was really exceptional storytelling. I would have loved to see a lot more Tanaraq. Tundra was also awe-inspiring and I was really into the vibe they gave off with the Inuit-esque lore...
It's a very unique and compelling origin. The fact that his "real" alter-ego was something malevolent kept me completely riveted, such contrast to Walter's light-heartedness and really loving being Sasquatch. I think JB created gold with the Great Beasts.
Snowbird (probably my second favorite Alphan) being tasked to destroy them was also equally compelling and unsettling writing. I hated issue 23 as a result but kept rereading it over and over... I could not put it down. Such a great read the early AF. I would have loved to see what your take of Sasquatch's return would have been JB. I bailed when you did and only popped in when Sasquatch was on the covers, suffice to say I was thoroughly gutted by his later treatment and the title was dead to me soon thereafter.

The covers of AF#23 & AF#24 are favorites.
Tons of JB rubble in both!
And the cape on Snowbird on #24 is a cool art technique.

I see rumblings of an AF movie. Much as I would appreciate the money, I hope it doesn’t happen. Given the degree to which Marvel has mucked with the characters, I cannot imagine Hollywood producing something that wouldn’t make me cringe.

I have hope. It’s all I’ve wanted from them….every time I hear the rumblings
about an X-Men reboot in the MCU, I gather myself for the greatness that is
Alpha Flight.

At first I wasn't fond of Sasquatch's origin. Another gamma-radiated hero? How mundane. Then came the reveal.... excellent!
