We used to rule a quarter of the world. God knows how. I'm starting to doubt we ever did, and we just tricked everyone into believing it by a cunning use of refined accents and an aloof patrician manner.
The first Prime Minister of Queen Elizabeth II's reign was Winston Churchill, and the last was Liz Truss. It feels both neatly and horribly symbolic.

I can name them all, but that’s because I’ve lived through the chaos.
Three is 6 weeks is the stat that annoys me.
Let alone the revealing door of Home Secretaries.
I’m hoping for a little bit of stability where people stay in a roll for a year or
two as opposed to six weeks. We shall see.

@James: Yeah, the Johnson-Truss-Sunak period was awful, and must have made us look like complete idiots in the eyes of the world.
Twitter/X is full of Corbynistas trying to argue that Corbyn did better by only winning 202 seats in 2019 than Starmer's done by winning 412 (so far - I think a handful more are still to be confirmed) in 2024. Total "People's Front Of Judea" stuff.
And First-Past-The-Post is coming in for heavy criticism, particularly from supporters of Reform, who won more votes than the Liberal-Democrats, but only got four MPs to their 70-odd.

Just saw a picture of the new PM having his first official meeting with the King. Somehow seemed so wrong that it wasn’t the Queen.

The fact that Liz Truss is earning fortunes in speaking engagements just about takes the biscuit.
Disillusioned by all parties, this was the first time that I didn't bother to quote (and I know that removes my right to moan).
I know that spoilt papers or no shows are an option, but an extra choice of 'no confidence' should be there too. It wouldn't affect the winning human being with the most votes - but it might make them realise the magnitude of the task ahead.

A junior high school teacher impressed upon me the idea that we should not vote AGAINST someone, but try to find a candidate to vote FOR. In Canada, with more parties and so more candidates that was easy enough. With only two candidates tho…….

Don’t forget, the UK voting system is fundamentally different than the USA
system.
We do not have an electoral college, we don’t have a round of primaries, we
don’t have a two term limit.
A party elects a leader - who pretty much gets booted if they lose the
election (although it should be noted that for the Conservatives, the vast
majority of leader changes have been through self immolation, during an
inter-vote period)
We only actually get to vote for our local MP, & the party with the largest
number of seats, provided that total number exceeds 326, that party’s
leader is the PM.
We do not have an electoral college.
First past the post only receives massive criticism when Labour win. There
was a referendum on a version of proportional representation in 2011, but
that’s because it became a stipulation on forming a coalition
(Conservative/Liberal Democrats)
It’s reared its head this year because of one person really.
Nigel sodding Farage.
The single most toxic person in our electoral system.
Responsible for Brexit, responsible for the shift to more nasty politics (in my
opinion). His general MO is to blame immigrants for everything & threaten
legal action on everything.
His candidates won large amounts of votes, but bar five people, came
second a lot - so lost the seats. His war cry through this parliament session
is clearly going to be ‘we need PR’ & his knuckle dragging followers will nod
their heads in agreement.
Let’s see how long he lasts as an MP now that he must register in the UK for
tax purposes & declare where his earnings come from - two things he really
does not want to do.
& let’s see how much exposure he continues to get with his five MPs vs the
Green’s four MP & the Liberal Democrat’s 70+ MPs. I bet he gets more than
the LDs do.
