Not a good contrast. Much to my annoyance, Kesel redrew the Superman and Captain Marvel faces in LEGENDS. My versions of both were far less angular -- especially in Cap's case.

Here's a contrast... Byrne (inked by ??? ) detail from a Legends miniseries promo piece:

Gotta love JB's Superman. I do like what Curt Swan and Grummett and Jurgens and Gammill have occasionally done with the Man of Steel, but Byrne's Superman is the quintessential Superman, in my opinion. He sums up the entire character with just a few deft strokes.
Byrne's Superman is simply the best. Like Lobster Tail garnished by Filet Mignon. It just doesn't get any better.
Not kissing up to you, JB, this is how I really feel. Your Superman was the artistic pinnacle of the character's 67-year history.

All in all a pretty silly accusation against JB. Yes, he has a recognizable style. I can almost always spot a Byrne face, therefore there should be some similarities between a JB Reed Richards, and any other JB mid thirties white character,( as should be expected ). Maybe, that's what this person was trying to say. Even still, So what? I remember reading some of those early Buscema Avengers issues that we may chuckle at a bit, because of the way that Steve Rogers, Hank Pym & Clint Barton all looked like clones when they appeared in a scene together in civies. It did'nt take away from those issues in the least & no one feels the need to character assasinate John Buscema.
Seems to me this guy probably was one of those people who never forgave the move from Uncanny to the F.F. It must seem weird to some of the younger fans, but as JB has noted, there really was ( is ) a palpable anger towards JB for leaving the X-Men. ( I went thru it myself ) It really colored JB in the minds of a huge segment of fandom. To me it's the only thing that might explain all this venom against an artist who:
1. dominated marvel in the mid to late seventies 2. drew one of the greatest comic runs of all time: x-men 3. had that 2nd only to Lee/Kirby FF run 4. dragged Superman into the present ( & out of the doldrums ) 5. somehow made She-hulk & Wonder Woman actually worth reading 6. Had a ( very ) solid independant run ( Dark Horse Next Men ) 7. continues to create, innovate & experiment thru to today: Lost Generation Generations, Hidden Years, Namor,Spiderman,Doom Patrol, Demon. 8. And, he's on time, a pro, writer, inker, penciler & all around creator
What does the guy have to do to get people off of his back ????
...and all this praise is from me, a dyed in the wool George Perez man, but you've got to tip your hat to JB....his accomplishments can't be denied.

What does (JB) have to do to get people off of his back ????***** Easy! "Admit" that my old stuff was better and promise that I am taking steps to improve the quality of my current work. Pretty much instantly you would see people pointing out the "steps" I was taking, and how much improved the work was -- especially if it was something they could somehow claim as their own. "I told Byrne years ago that his aglets suck, and he's finally fixed them!" This without my making the even the tiniest change to my approach to the work, of course. Think not? Remember, we are dealing in large part here with people who actually bought it when WIZARD did a big article about Rob Liefeld's "new style" --- a "style" that was indistinguishable from his "old" style. Remember, we are dealing with fan mantras here -- fantras? -- and so there is nothing akin to logic or reality involved. The key is to fin a way to replace one mantra with another.

And guess what...that same "magazine" thought it would be beneficial for Liefeld to do a piece about how to draw, using his "Wonder Girl" pin-up as the source material.
Learned nothing...I was waiting to see how he explained how he drew those WRISTS!!!

Interesting! During the seventies many a letters page was enlivened by the Kirby/Adams debate...has there ever been such a debate about the two modern equivalent artists - i.e. Byrne/Perez?

Well, Ian, I know that amongs my comics fan pals, we often debated Byrne/Perez, and let me tell you, I routinely lost the argument ! Thank goodness George Perez drew that wonderfull X-men Annual # 3 with Arkon as the Villian. It was inked by Terry Austen & is to me on the same par as the work JB was doing on Uncanny at the same time.
I'll take George on the Avengers, & most team books, but JB is 1A to Perez's 1 Obviously the X-Men belong to Byrne and JB handled some important characters ( like Spiderman, the Thing, Cap, D.D. and the Hulk ) better than Perez. Also JB could keep a deadline, something George did'nt do well until The 1980's Teen Titans. ( Which, now that I think of it, my buddies countered my position on George's X-men annual with JB's version of the Titans on one of their annuals ! ) the debate continues.........
all I know is that as a comics fan I've been lucky to have been witness to the great work both JB & Perez for 30 years now !!!

Damn, that would have been an awesome Shazam! series.
John, don't wanna jinx it but any chance of the pitch being reconsidered at some point by DC?
Another question I've been meaning to ask you, re the conversation about working with different inkers...I always like Bob Wiacek's work over your pencils on Alpha Flight and Namor. Were you also happy with that combination?

Boy, you said it! If I didn't know that was from Legends, I would swear that was from Tom Grummet's run on Superman during the "Death of Superman" storyline. The common thread here? Karl Kesel.
That is NOT your Wonder Woman!
