I would swear that was from Tom Grummet's run on Superman during the
"Death of Superman" storyline. The common thread here? Karl Kesel.

**********

Kesel was not inking Grummett at the time. I believe it was Doug
Hazlewood.

...Thank goodness George Perez drew that wonderfull X-men Annual # 3 with Arkon as the Villian.  It was inked by Terry Austen & is to me on the same par
as the work JB was doing on Uncanny at the same time...

Trivia time: JB inked one page of that Annual. Let's see how many of you (excepting JB, naturally) know which page it is.

It's the page where the X-Men are fighting a lot of the people on Arkon's planet and there are a lot of them in the background. Colossus's uniform is ripped and he's riding a dinosaur-thing. I don't know the page number.

Key-rect!  Doug is a damned good inker.  He seems to fly below the radar, though.

The only work of Hazelwood's I have seen is DP and as I said in another thread, I think he does an excellent job...comparing the scans of DP 11 to the finished article, the inks look amazingly faithful to the pencils to me, whilst still managing to imprint a little personality...top notch

You got me there.  So why am I remembering Kesel inking Grummet at some point?  Did they work together on Superboy, or the FF/Challengers Amalgam issue?

That's the page! Page 37, to be precise.

Thing about that page is that I always thought JB pencilled it and George inked it!! It wasn't until I asked JB about it here that I found out I was incorrect. It just looks like a JB page to me. ( or it did. I haven't seen it in a long time).

The second Kesel/Grummett Superboy run was inked by Kesel, and I'll say
they meshed together very nicely. "Challengers of the Fantastic" was inked
by Doug Hazlewood.

Exactly! JB uses a wide range of different faces, and always has as far as I can tell. Even in his earliest Marvel work, his Storm did not look like Misty Knight, who did not look like Black Widow, who did not look like Jean Grey, etc.

There are Jim Lee "faces," Frank Miller "faces," Steve Dillon "faces," and so on. They don't draw every character with the same face anymore than JB does, but you know their style when you see it. I think that must be the problem with the numbskulls that are trying to criticize JB on his faces.

Now that Jim Lee has been doing stuff for a while. I can really see that. I'm still not sure if they are Jim Lee Faces or Scott Williams faces but it sure was hard to tell who was supposed to be Lois in that Superman run.

It does a bit. JB is a powerful inker, in the sense of Tom Palmer, Joe Sinnott, and Klaus Janson. Whenever he inks someone, I can tell he worked on the piece. He's inked Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Fred Hembeck, George Tuska, and some other great artists.

I'd like to see JB ink another artist again sometime, as I now realize I haven't seen him do so again for some time now.

Not a good contrast. Much to my annoyance, Kesel redrew the Superman and Captain Marvel faces in LEGENDS. My versions of both were far less angular -- especially in Cap's case.

JB what is this drawing from...or did you just do it for this thread topic?
