The Edmonton School Board followed the Alberta Government Ministerial order to the letter which includes banning written depictions of sex outside of religious texts. The UCP need to actually make a rule with context and thought instead of a one size fits all net, because this is what happens

The "banned" books are commonly available in book stores, libraries and schools all across Alberta, outside the K-12 schools. It has always been the purview of libraries to select and make available what they deem appropriate. Think of all the books "banned" from libraries, just because the library could not afford them all.
The Alberta Government Ministerial order #030/2025, does not contain a list of books. And by the looks of it, most of the order codifies the common practices of public school libraries and libraries in general.

The order needs to have a list because it is overly broad, this is the actual problem. The UCP don't want to be the ones who have to choose which books to ban and it should only be on them which books to ban.

Edmonton is the Center for left wing politics in very right wing Alberta. The Premier of Alberta is calling the Edmonton School Board’s extensive list malicious compliance. ie, they are banning books they know could continue to be in their libraries just to raise a fuss.

Danielle doesn't want to be the one who does the banning so when the blame game starts, she can deflect (as usual). Other school libraries in the province are just giving books away because they don't have the staff to fulfill the governments order. The government banned the books they should be the one's making the list.

I’m having flashbacks to when I was a kid in Canada. The novel FANNY HILL had been banned in England, and my parents went to great lengths to disguise a copy to send to friends over there.

According to our illustrious Secretary of Defense, no black person or woman ever did anything through merit, only by the good will of superior white people, which is not only why the US military is not just banning any mention of anyone other than white people, they're removing black people and women from their posts for the same reason.
Remember, it's not too far a stretch from burning books to burning people, after all.

I can understand banning books, or persons, preaching hate.•• By whose definition? On the internet the word "hate" has come to mean any disagreement. "Haters gotta hate." Watch Trumf ban anything that is less than super flattering to him, labeling it "hate speech". _______________________________________ Hate speech is part of free speech.

And that is one of the hardest things for some (most?) people to comprehend. We wish it otherwise, but people have the right to be a-holes.

The wisdom of the First Amendment is to proscribe a federal law "abridging the freedom of speech" in the broadest terms so that only subsequently on a case-by-case basis could exceptions be argued as necessary, e.g., restrictions on fraud, child porn, etc.
Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote: “if there is any principle of the Constitution that more imperatively calls for attachment than any other it is the principle of free thought – not free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought that we hate.”

There are many constraints on expression, not least of which is the reaction such expression may elicit from your own community should your community disapprove, or the way your employer might respond. It should not be the purview of the Federal government to get involved, however.
That all said, there are many, many exceptions even where the Federal government is concerned. And this still raises the thorny question of who gets to decide where to slide the scale when it comes to those exceptions. Yes, people have the right to be assholes and it's a good question of who decides what is hate speech and what is not. But you could make a similar argument for obscenity and incitement to violence. Hate speech is not a particularly distant cousin to incitement to violence.
I lean hugely in favour of an 'anything goes' approach to free speech, but there is a borderline somewhere between hate speech and incitement to violence and I think it's not all that easy to work out where it lies.

The right to be an asshole is one thing, to harrass someone is something else, and the same can be said for incitement to violence and apology of crime.
The freedom of some ends where that of others begins.
