The first Hulk comic (#202) I ever got featured Sal's pencils. That issue got me hooked on both the the character and Sal's artwork. I would grow up on both (I was six years old when that book came out). So, to say he's my definitive Hulk artist is an understatement.

Beyond that, he was just an all-around fantastic storyteller.

Very sad news to this very big fan.

His comics, in addition to being masterclasses in storytelling, were just plain fun to look at. In many ways, Sal struck me as equal parts Marvel/Kirby style artist and Bigfoot cartoonist. He didn't really 'do' subtlety - though he sure knew how to build tension! He proved that even as the 80's moved more towards artists with a more grounded and rounded style, you really didn't need to have that as a major flavor if you knew how to draw with flair.

I met Sal and his wife while I was working a small comic show in Gettysburg back in '94 or '95. Super nice guy. He drew a Spider-Man head shot for me after the show and thanked me for being a fan. His run on Spectacular Spider-Man in the late 80's is one of my favorites. Sad news indeed.

So sad. I grew up on Sal's Hulk work. i think his work on
Thor alongside Walt Simonson was brilliant and his style so
complimentary to Walt's art when he took over the art
duties. R.I.P.

One of the high points of my 50+ years in comics was learning that the Hulk annual we did together was among Sal’s favorite jobs.
