The side debate about creator/co-creator makes me think of Hollywood: who creates the character, the actor or the writer? "Both" is the only answer I can see, since neither can be separated from the creation without changing the creation into some other character.

****

In theater, the first person to play a character is said to have "created" that character. (My Ex appeared, long ago, in a Jerry Stiller play in Chicago, called "Three on a Runway", and since she was the first to play her character, she is formally listed as having "created" the character.) Also, I once read an interview with Adam West, in which he referred to having "created" the character of Batman (evidentally he was not aware that two other actors had played the character before he did).

It strikes me as one of those situations where a word with a specific meaning is adopted to a different and somewhat confusing usage (see "theory", for instance). Obviously, the only person who can be said to literally "create" a character is the one who thinks up the character in the first place -- which in theater or film would most often be the writer. The director, the actor, even the costume designer, could more accurately be said to be interpreting the character.

(And -- say, is the Hulk wearing brass knuckles on that cover??)

Captain Britain was created by Chris Claremont/Herb Trimpe for a Marvel UK weekly of the same name. (JB drew his first American Appearance in MTU)

*****

As I recall, the character was created on orders from Stan, who also provided the name.

Steve has a great list-- my only addition is that I'd add Box (Roger Bochs), Wild Child, Gilded Lily and Diamond Lil (Lillian Crawley) to the Alpha Flight list, and maybe break out the Superman and JLA stuff with its own subhead (there are probably a few more on the Superman side as well).

Way to go!

And... 1700 posts! Woohoo!

Andrew, I added yours to the list. I'm going to just re-edit the list on page two every time characters are added to keep this thread tidy.

Can we start a list of DC's Generations characters that includes the character's real name?

I don't mean this to be as snotty, or snooty, as it sounds, but:

DON'T FORGET the 1,000s of characters that appear in background shots, go un-named, and just "walk-on" in JB's books.

Cross Mystique off the list. She first appeared in Ms. Marvel in 1978. Issue 16 had Raven Darkholme and 18 had her in her Mystique form.

Unless, of course, JB created/ designed her for that book.

Add Control to the list of Next Men characters. Pretty important character, methinks.

Brian, as I noted earlier in this thread, I believe Mystique was designed by Dave Cockrum.

Steve- again, excellent work. This list ought to be updated as new names surface.

Can't check while writing this post, but the FF list ought to include Karisma (a one-shot cosmetics-based villainess) if it doesn't already. Did you add Malice (Susan Storm's evil persona) and Kristof von Doom as well?

Let's keep it rollin'!

Did JB design her or did Kerry Gammill?
