I'd say Black Panther...(plus you'd draw Storm again for as long as you wanted them to remain married).
Second Choice would be Nick Fury..LOTS to do there whether head of S.H.I.E.L.D, or field agent or even loose cannon.
Dr. Strange, yeah. Yeah. YEAH! YEAH! That's growing and growing on me.
Dr. Strange..YEAHH!!! Ok.
Strange, then Panther, then Fury.
YEAH!!!

After mulling it over a bit, I'm more inclined towards Doctor Strange than the Black Panther. I think Doctor Stranger is a harder character to get right, and needs someone of JB's talent.
One thing I'd like to see is for the character to be less powerful than usually portrayed. I'd rather see him as a sorcerer rather than the sorcerer (supreme, no less!) I don't get the obsession with overpowering characters, which is the main reason I stop short of loving Superman except when his handler is wise enough to bring his power levels down (JB, Bruce Timm). There is so much more dramatic possibility when a character faces an uphill battle, rather than already being at the top of the heap.
I'd love to see Doctor Strange in a very dark, Lovecraftian world -- although the character shouldn't be dark, just his surroundings.

JB said:
...Same is true of Ka-Zar. Of course there would be trips back to the Savage Land -- Hey! Dinosaurs! -- but Ka-Zar and Zabu in the "asphalt jungle" would be, I think, much more interesting.
I would most definitely buy that comics!!

I never thought of Nick Fury as a spy.
•••
There is a tendency to use "spy" and "secret agent" as if they are interchangable. I have often pointed out, for example, that James Bond is not a spy, despite often being refered to as such. He is a guided missile, and rarely, if ever, do his missions include actual espionage.Fury, born out of the popularity of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." is yet another kind of critter, the kind that operates largely outside governmental controls, yet nevertheless putatively supports one government or ideology. Most important element, of course, is that S.H.I.E.L.D. is the good guys. They should never, ever, ever be viewed as, or portrayed as, an "untrustworthy" organization, as is the common characterization of the C.I.A. or the N.S.A. S.H.I.E.L.D. is the guys we call in when the other guys go bad.

The Storm debacle is precisely what I had in mind when I said I would "not be weighed down by the latest'"fixes'."

Since SHIELD isn't a secret organization anymore - Fury would be more of a Special Agent as opposed to Secret Agent, right? He's actually DFO - Director of Field Operations - if he were the Director of SHIELD (as a whole), he'd be in an office in DC more than on the Hellicarrier - dealing with budget and jurisdictional issues. The DFO does a lot of that, too - but at least is still considered a "field" supervisor.
Would seem like a good position for Henry Peter Gyrich (spelling?) -- Director of SHIELD with Fury as the Director of Ops doing all the cool shit.

If I had a Director-level position in S.H.I.E.L.D., regardless of the actual job description, I would insist on a jet pack.
If the people reporting to me got to have jet packs, and I didn't, not a day would go by that I wouldn't gripe about it.

Speaking of Nick Fury, just came across this in a link Paul Greer provided to his art collection in another thread...

It's the first time I've seen this. It's from the abortive Marvel World of Tomorrow project which eventually resurfaced as the 2112 one shot released through Dark Horse. Anyone know if any other unused art ever saw the light of day?
(Sure I could have posted this question in the art thread but I figured it would be nice to be reminded about JB's Nick Fury here since he is currently being discussed.)

Funny, I thought you were thinking of Bucky's retcon status in The Invaders ( my personal choice of your provided options). I'm SURE that would apply for you as well... Not listed, but I think a PERFECT JB Marvel vehicle would be a book LIKE 'EXILES', where you could reality hop anywhere/when you wanted, with whatever version of characters you choose. You would get to tell ANY story you wanted to, and STILL be considered in continuity. EVERYONES happy..the continuity nazis who need to have everything all tidy tidy, and you, cuz you could ignore all the recent character developments you dont like..everyone wins!!?
Hey, <I'd> buy it..
