You misunderstand me, JB.  I wasn't suggesting anything like that (in fact, I've said in this thread that I had no interest in exploring Scioli's work based on what I've seen of it).  I was merely saying, as an aside, that Mignola evidently doesn't mind someone drawing in his style (why I said "incidentally"); I just find that interesting is all.

JB - again why the righteous indignation? Why are you taking offense on behalf of Kirby?

From  what i understand Kirby disliked your OMAC series, your use of Barda in Action Comics and your role as company man for Marvel in the early years?

Why do you presume to be offended on his behalf? Its not like you and he saw eye to eye...

That , to me, would be a little sad..Ive always liked Duncan's work. I'd hate to see him just start  doing Hellboy in Mignola's style only.

Hellboy is an interesting character to work on, as he seems completely beholden to Mignola's style  to seem  'right'.

Agreed.  From what little I've seen of his work, he doesn't seem to be an out-and-out clone.  He seems to have some of his own chops.  I think it's for the fans, though.  I don't think the fans would appreciate a distinct departure from previous HELLBOY series.

Only one I heard of was OMAC -- and that was one scene.

But you've become entirely too transparent.

I've got it right here, right next to Marilyn Monroe's love letter to me. I keep them both with me while i sit in my captain Kirk commander's chair with my feet resting on my sleigh, rosebud.

Maybe it's an old school thing called respect?

Then again I'm also told sarcasm is wasted on the young.

So let me get this straight --- we start out excoriating some artists for copying poses from other artists, and we end up justifying an artist who is making a living by copying (badly) another artist's whole style.

That about right?

That's the conclusion I've come up with from all 10909090 message board swipe debates I've ever witnessed. Most fans are too emotional to make fair judgements.

  • Thievery is done by artists people dislike.
  • Homages are done by artists people respect.

And the sad truth in that, is that we all know there is a small legion of
people right this minute poring over every page I ever drew, looking for
anything that can even remotely be called a swipe.

Well said Martin. Hence the pejorative term swipe verses the complimentary
homage.

Again--it’s almost “outsider art” because of its faults.

That’s a great way of putting it. I think that’s what I like about the black-and-white independent mid-1980s comics in my collection, too. They’re certainly not very professional, but reading them, I feel a personal connection to the creators, whose tastes and ambitions are undisguised by craft or professionalism. (Not to knock professionalism or professionals, of course. This is just an alternate thing that I also like.)

What part of OMAC didn’t Jack Kirby like?

I loved everything about it (it was one of the three comics of 1991 that turned me into a life-long Byrne Victim) except the moral at the end, myself. It would make me feel good about Jack Kirby if that’s what he didn’t like about it too.

[Edit: italicised OMAC.]
