I have a STRONG aversion to sig lines that contain graphics! Sometimes these the graphics are so large and overwhelming that they take up more space than the post itself. I've seen "sig lines" (i.e. graphics) that are damn near the width of the page! (this may have been eliminated as a feature, but I do recall seeing them before)

Members need to understand that many people who use internet forums initially just scan through a page when it first loads and that these graphic-heavy sigs end up being no more attractive or useful than a speed-bump! My automobile doesn't like them, and my eyes aren't crazy about them either.

I had the supreme nerve to politely point this out to someone once and the reaction I got was a bit of indignation from the user and a lot of equally "get over it" amen-reactions from others. I never mentioned it again.

I don't like the idea of turning off the sig lines feature just because a few people take the privilege to an extreme. I hope JB's 2-cents will help effect some voluntary change.

I had a signature (a quote from the 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon), but after reading JB's post I thought about it for a minute and decided it's not really something that I need to have there in every single post.

At least we don't have "signature pics" here that take up half the screen view as on other forums I visit.

Large signature pictures are one of the reasons I visit hardly any other forums. Some people even have more than one. It's not unusual to see posts following this pattern: quote of a post that's five paragraphs long, "I agree", three huge signature pictures. Saying "I agree" takes about half a page and in many places if you point out the waste of space, they'll call you a pet name for Richard.

I used to use them on other forums, but don't think I ever have here.  And now when I do use one, I "snip" it off after my first post in a thread so that it doesn't repeat.

I think that sigs (pics) are annoying and just take up space.  However, I find some sigs that contain some type of referenced phrase interesting.

I use my signature line as a signature line, literally.  Seems appropriate.

I really enjoy the avatar pics and I identify most people by that rather than their names most of the time!  Makes it easy to scan a thread looking for posts by people whose opinions I enjoy.

Sig lines are ok because they're usually easy to ignore.  I absolutely cannot stand the large picture people add to their sig lines on just about every other message board I've ever read.  Terrible.  Makes my eyes bleed. I'm thankful these are used with great restraint at this forum.  There are only a couple people I know of with a sig pic that annoys me at all and thankfully neither of them are regular posters.

Just my $0.02

I helped set up a web board for someone and the policy was no signature pics, no exceptions. It took no time at all before people were adding them manually.

The worst situation I've encountered lately was on a TV network's web board. The content designed to appear in a narrow column which only made things worse. The signatures many frequent posters used were so large, containing pithy quotes and images, I had difficulty finding their brief comments from all the excess visual noise. I found no option to turn off the repetitive junk either.

••

This goes very much to one of the points I wonder about: Do posters forget what's in their sig lines/graphics/etc? We see plenty of those inappropriate juxtapositions, such as cited above, but we also see a lot of those one or two word, short sentence responses that are followed by an enormous and repetitive graphic.

What's the point?

I use my signature line to cause injury to the French language. Spanish class fo' life yo!

I'll dump it if it offends though. I don't consider it self promotion so much as gibberish.
