My signature line is meaningless. And I don't care what anyone thinks of it because of that.If it was a political statement, or something that obviously contravenes the rules and common sense/common courtesy guidelines, yes I'd care. Either because I was not intending to offend or step over a boundary, or because I was intending to. But it's a silly quote from a cooking show host. So I don't give a shit what people think of it. It makes me smile. Turn off your ability to see it (as JB has said he has), take away the ability to use it, ban me, smile at it too, or just pay no attention to it.

I find most sig lines annoying so I'm glad JB spoke up about them. It's much easier to read the board when they are kept to a minimum.

I've had the sig lines disabled here for so long, I forget I had one set myself (now removed.) I don't have a problem with sig lines, per se, as long as they're kept reasonable. Unfortunately, unless they're forced to, most people don't seem to have the self-control to keep things "reasonable" -- thus, we end up with sig lines that are self-promoting, or inappropriate, or tasteless, or unwieldy.
I've been to forums where signatures were beyond out of control -- massive graphics that take up a third of the screen, huge walls of text that stretch on for 20, 30 lines, often with no break or line to indicate its start. I can't recount the number of times I've read of post thinking, what the hell is this person even talking about ... and then I realize I had drifted into their signature, and only the first sentence had been actual content.
Avatars, on the other hand, I love. I find they help to put an image to the name. I've seen pics of the real Matt Reed but, to me, he'll always be Robotman. (Although even these can be difficult. A few months back we had a handful of users with very tacky avatars that made browsing here during working hours very risky. Fortunately, they seem to have been dealt with.)

You have no problem saying you don't give a shit about what John thinkson his own board? Too bad he has a problem with it, but it doesn'tbother you?
Matt in NO WAY did I read from Al's post that he truly meant he didn't give a shit what Mr Byrne thinks, I know for a fact Al respects Mr Byrne a great deal. He was just saying he liked his silly Rachael Ray saying . Al is no idiot and he is not going to pick this issue to be rude to a person he admires. I mean seriously, Mr Byrne started this thread by saying :
"As you probably know, I keep all the bells and whistles turned off, soI don't see avatars and sig lines and graphics, but every so often Ilog-off and peruse the board just to see what things look like."
I took this thread as a reminder to not do business on here and Mr Byrne thought it was pretty funny to see people with nice sig lines only to call the person an ass in a post, which I have seen people do.
If this was something that made the site run slow or would bother Mr Byrnes when he came on, Al would change it with no thought, he was just being silly.

Totally not the point, but nice to see you quickly turn to banning. Typical.

What???Never mind. I think we may both have blinders on to what the other is trying to say here, Matt. If I could wire you five bucks I'd tell you to buy a beer tonight on me. Peace, man. I'm dropping out of this one.

Out of curiosity, I just turned on the ability to see the sigs. I notice not a lot of people have them. But I do think Matt Reed has a cool one.

Give me a break, Jodi. There's absolutely no way you can misconstrue or misinterpret what Al wrote.

Pretty plain and simple to me. If it's just Al being all "cute and curmudgeonly" then I think it probably didn't have a place in this thread or could have been phrased without being confrontational, which is something he ironically accused me of being.

Totally agree. I associate people with their avatars. I've thought about changing mine on occasion, but I've used it for so long I think it acts as short hand for people scrolling through a thread. I know it does for me. Can't see changing it.

Matt you are talking to a person who uses cuss words in every day language, not one of my best habits BTW, but I grew up with a grandma who thought my grandpa's name was "God damn it Clayton" So Al's post did not come off mean spirited to me. So I looked at his post as not mean spirited.
Sometimes that is the problem with forums, you can't hear the inflection or see the way the person looks when you say something. But I know Al respects and admires Mr Byrne.

Without the context of tone of voice, swearing equals confrontational. I should know that better than most. Certain words, when seen and read, automatically emphasize themselves and suggest more passion that may be behind them if just said conversationally."I don't really put any thought or consideration into what..." would have been better. Mea culpa. Of course, that changes nothing, because I'm still saying that I don't care what anyone here thinks of my signature line. Gotta find funds now for two beers. Beer makes everything better.
