Since I started poking around message boards, lo these many years ago, one of the things that has struck me as somewhat odd are the Sig Lines and other such things that people install in their posts.

I guess I could almost understand such things if they changed from post to post, or if they appeared only in the first post in a thread, or some other such tweaking, but I wonder at the point when basically they become the kind of overkill we see in just about any thread.

Joe Blow and Sam Snow get into a hot debate, posts bouncing back and forth, sometimes long, sometimes short and pithy, and EVERY ONE has the same sig line and/or graphic, over and over and over and over and over…

Why? I have yet to see a message board in which the poster's name is not automatically tagged to the post, as here, on the left. Most people use some kind of graphic avatar, too. Isn't that enough?

And, I have to say, it becomes more than a little comical when sig lines produce something like…

..

Well, you're all a bunch of assholes and should go fuck yourselves!

Cheers!

Sam

..

Hmm. Intent muted?

As you probably know, I keep all the bells and whistles turned off, so I don't see avatars and sig lines and graphics, but every so often I log-off and peruse the board just to see what things look like. Usually I find something silly, or annoying. Or rude -- as this morning, when viewing sig lines showed me at least one poster who has been ignoring the Forum rule against self-promotion.

A word to some of you --- maybe you should rein it in a notch or twelve?

Why not just remove the option to include a signature altogether? It's not really necessary...what is the point really? especially when you can include a link to your homepage in your settings.

Altho I run my views without the bells and whistles, I really prefer not to actually remove the options for others. But sometimes it seems that hoping people will exercise restraint, as well as obey the rules, is asking too much.

Let's see what sort of response this thread elicits.

Like, how many people will clean out their self promotional stuff voluntarily.

This is why I have viewing of signatures blocked on here.  It eases up on the "noise".

At least we don't have "signature pics" here that take up half the screen view as on other forums I visit.

Yeah the types of examples that JB and Martin showed are the reason I have them turned off as well.  Not that I am against them but they can get distracting and take away from what is being discussed.

I'm just curious if my signature is ok?  I have it (as you can see) as a link to the Perhapanauts webpage.

••

Is that self-promotion or just a site you like? The latter is okay -- tho boring and annoying after multiple posts in the same thread! -- the former is not.

I think it's in the nature of a sig line, even if interesting once, to become extremely tiresome upon repeated viewing. Sig pics are nothing but annoying from the get-go. So, I have that feature turned off.

If a JBF member appreciates a particular site so much that he deems it worthy enough to share, then either a thread can be created or, better yet, the link can be posted as topically relevant in an existing thread.

I very much like the standard JBF style of name and possibly avatar to the left, nice and neat and small and out of the way.
