If you finally spoke out against the "Monkey" banner that there was so much discussion about earlier, then I apologize for saying you hadn't decried the racism that had been specifically discussed here.

Jeff says: "Society just isn't geared to think of racism in any way other than white against everyone else."

And then before that he asked about the definition of racism - let me answer your second question and then show how that applies to the first.

Racism is the act of one race oppressing another. Therefore, with the white race being the only race (as a whole) that is in a position of power, it is the only race that can oppress other races, as a whole.

I get that the first person who runs to Webster.com will trot back with something about how racism is just a meaningless interchangable term for prejudice or bigotry, but I dare ya to reasearch the entomology of the word.

Anyway - in other news...

So, I've spent the last few weeks trying to figure out who defaced my Obama bumper stickers and I think I have it narrowed down - one guy in my apartment complex has a confederate flag hanging out his window and my neighbor's teen son has white supremacy slogans on his skateboard...

Those two are my major suspects right now.

I think the words racism and racist are thrown out too easily nowadays and dilutes the true impact of the words.

Thank you Mike O' for answering from the heart instead of rushing off to Websters.  That's what I was looking for, what the word means to a person.  You're saying that only whites can be racist, but I disagree.  I think that anyone that uses something as minor as a different skin pigmentation to oppress another person is a racist.  The street goes both ways.

For example, the Duke Lacrosse mess.  The team was labeled racist (and rapists) when the story broke about 3 white men raping and assaulting a black woman.  88 faculty members of Duke University wrote a letter condeming the team.  3 players were being charged with crimes.  Only, the woman that made the charges lied.  There was no rape.  There was no assault.  Why wasn't she labeled a racist for her actions against the 3 lacrosse players?  She was the person with the power having a large part of the university staff, as well as a District Attorney running for reelection behind her.

As for your car, I'm sorry that's happening.  Defacing anyone's property is wrong no matter what the reason, and I hope you are able to find out who did it and they are prosecuted for it.  I suggest a 220 volt line running to your car when it's parked (but don't forget to disconnect when you want to get in).  : )

I have to say it. Jeff that example is horrible. Mike O'Brien forgive me if I'm missunderstanding. I am curious, what would hate be called, if directed to a white person, based on his or her race? Sorry if I am posting too much on these subjects but nobody I know likes to have these types of disscussions. I was always told not to discuss politics, religionor other taboo subjects in polite conversation, but thats why polite conversation is boring.

Jeff believe it or not, I agree with you on what happened to the lacrosse team, in fact when that all happened I wrote a letter to the editor to the newspaper where that happened, condemning the district attorney
here is the link to it

But here it is in full:

Nifong's shameful ways

Shame on District Attorney Mike Nifong for railroading the Duke lacrosse players and withholding important DNA information. I understand the knee-jerk reaction for wanting to right civil rights wrongs of the past, but shame on Nifong. He's no different than the white supremacists of the past. It's just this time, those accused are a different color.

The thing is Jeff, hate is hate and yes a person can judge a white person unfairly because they are white, as is the case in the lacrosse team. And it is wrong, but historically racism against white people is in no way even close to the same, to what black america has to gone through and still goes through today.

Do we whites need to repay black america for crimes of our ancestors, yeah we kind of do, according to a friend of mine that is black, she doesn't want anything extra, she just wants a level playing field and for white people to stop the racist crap and for others to condemn those that do use it.  I don't feel it is all that much to ask for. Now I think affirmative action is a good thing, at one point we won't need it, but now I still think we do, because we have had a head start in life.

I feel like I am a person that doesn't want it all my way, I am willing to listen and maybe change my mind. But this tea bag movement isn't about working together.  And as we have pointed out on here, there is a racist element to it that needs to be pointed out and told, enough is enough.  As I have said before, me writing a letter against it, doesn't hold as much weight as someone like you. In my letter to the editor in the lacrosse deal, I wrote that I was a democrat, as was Nifong and was ashamed of his behavior and I think that is one of the reasons it got printed.

And before any one thinks "Jesus she writes a lot of letters" yes I do and I am proud of it and don't understand why everyone doesn't do it.

Miss a day, miss a lot...

While I've been traveling, recovering from traveling and catching up on the office the last couple of days, I've been away from the thread for a bit and five or six pages have generated in the interim. I'll have to go back and read it more thoroughly, but my quick skim reveals everyone is still hunkered down in their trenches, not gaining any ground (and maybe that isn't even an objective), just happy lobbying artillery at the other side.

We're all intelligent, thoughtful and passionate people, who have a love for this country even if we are non-citizens or live abroad. I'd like us to try another tact. Rather than posting pictures to declare who's out-of-control crazies are the worst bunch and all the other games, let's find out where we've all got common ground.

What are some issues that we all might agree on?
