Matthew - awesome story! Although, in cases like that I often feel really bad for the wife and kids. I hope to live to see a day where homosexuality is accepted enough that people don't feel the need to hide or repress themselves like that - they should be free to be who they are from the start!

"Clark got the job under false pretenses, so the marriage he performed doesn't count, right?". (I know, it's a joke. Just to get that out there.) If he'd been a judge performing a marriage who it turns out didn't have the necessary formal qualifications, that might have been the case. But in most churches I know of it's official policy that the "sinfulness" of the Priest doesn't affect the sanctity of the sacrament. Which I'm sure is a great comfort to a lot of people in light of recent controversies.

I'm surprised no one's talking about this: Bank bill would end bailouts. So that means it'll just "fly" through Congress, right??? I would say, "no." It is Congress after all. *sigh*

I can't wait for the new federal law regarding overdraft fees to go in affect in July.

In a weird twist of fate (me being Republican and all) it was brought to my attention that President Obama is related to Wild Bill Hickok. As it turns out I am also related to Wild Bill Hickok which means President Obama and I are very distant cousins. What a weird weekend I had.

He's also related to Bush and Cheney.

I feel your pain, Jason,
When me dad worked up our family tree he found that we're a branch of the Moravians, which claims a bloodline to Jesus (post-crucifiction, of course). Imagine the joy I've had reconciling that...

I feel your pain, Jason **************** What pain would there be in being related to Obama? Jason may not agree with his politics, but that doesn't mean Obama isn't a decent human being. Do you feel pain if your mother, father, sister, brother, etc. has differing viewpoints than you do? Besides, Jason is on record here publicly stating he supports gay rights so the current Republican party doesn't want him anyway.

Doesn't mean he is either.

What pain would there be in being related to Obama?
About the same as being "related" to Jesus, evidently, judging from my note. And He appeared to be a decent human being...
William, I feel your pain is an expression of empathy and understanding, but also has a deeper context. The phrase became a cliche when it was used (overused) by a previous President, and became a staple of late night comedy show performers who would apply the phrase for the most trivial of injuries and non-injuries. It is used in that spirit.
And so, this "secret shame" that separates Jason from his fellow Republicans, or (perhaps worse) links him ever more more tightly to Dick Cheney, yet another Obama cousin...
Thus, as a great Vulcan philosopher said, "Would that constitute... a joke?"
Yes. Yes, it does.
