Seriously? Wow. Who writes these books, 8 year olds? _____________________________ No, it's fans turn pro and wannabe screenwriters, who are trying way to hard to be "KEWL" and "clever". It's the type of person who lies about being in talks to write a screenplay for a new SUPERMAN movie.

So only color schemes can be impractical?

My first exposure was The New Doom Patrol from Showcase Presents. I then started trying to find out more about the original DP. Love the original team.

Reading some of the older DP stories , they seemed to be the most self-loathing super-team ever.

Speaking of older DP stories, the current Doom Patrol series written by Keith Griffin features the original team of Elasti-Girl, Negative Man and Robot Man. But unlike the series that John Byrne had written and drawn, the new writer has the freedom to mention the past history of the Doom Patrol which Keith has been doing and he even shown John Byrne's version of the team on page 15 of issue 6. I think that it is a shame that Mr. Byrne was told to re-boot the series when he was on the book because it caused bad vibes with some of the loyal Doom Patrol fans and I'm sure that he would have had more readers if he didn't have to start the series over from scratch. Even though I wasn't thrilled with the fact that the series had to be re-booted at the time, I was still a fan of the John Byrne produced Doom Patrol which I thought he had done a fantastic job on! I even liked the new characters Nudge, Grunt and Vortex. I sometimes wonder why John Byrne has to do series based on other peoples creations when he can come up with his own unique and interesting characters. As I write this, Alpha Flight and the Next Men come to mind. I hope that someday Mr. Byrne will once again create a fantastic team of characters and receive the recognition he deserves!

"loyal Doom Patrol fans"
On the other message boards, the guys who were upset by the reboot were indeed fans, but not of the original Patrol. Some cared only about Grant Morrison's Patrol. Some were Teen Titans fans who didn't want the sanctity of Beast Boy's continuity sullied. Some were just DC continuity freaks who didn't know what to make of a reboot without a Crisis behind it. My guess is that those who absolutely enjoyed the original Arnold Drake stories when they first came out, or tracked down those comics later, numbers only in the few hundreds. And most of those guys probably don't pay attention to new comics anymore.

I think he'd have been cursed either way. Fans of Morrison's DP would not be fan of JB's more traditional take and basically undoing Morrison's. I figured that at least the way he did write it, it allows the stories to exist on their own, it's a whole new take that in no way addresses Morrison's run. That story was pretty much taken to it's end, all the main characters killed off or changed to bear no resemblance to their original incarnations. At least JB's take left Morrison's run intact, more than he did for any of the DP incarnations that preceded his.
I've not cared for Giffen's take. None of the characters are likeable, all reflect the more cynical Morrison and modern DC characterizations and no one that I want to spend several bucks a month to spend any time with.
Personally, I'd have preferred a partial reboot, just reboot from right before Morrison took over with the New DP still alive and the old members showing having survived the island exploding. The one thing I really missed from JB's run were the classic villains such as General Immortus, Mallah and the Brain (other than their cameo). I would have loved to have seen his take on the A-V-M Man.

I think not having any of the classic villians in the DP book was why it failed.

I was a reader of the original Doom Patrol and loved it, as I loved JB's version. The other versions weren't even close. So yeah, those of us who were there at the start loved JB's version. Now then, a Hidden Years Crossover between the original X-Men and the Doom Patrol is long overdue. But which publisher has the intelligence to do it?

I am in partial agreement with Eric Lund. Although I enjoyed JB's Doom Patrol immensely, I was really hoping to see him go to town on Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man, and Mr. 103 (or however many elements we're up to now), not to mention the classic Brotherhood of Evil cast o' characters.

Of course by using the phrase Hidden Years I meant the only way that would work would be if it included the credit "Written and Pencilled by John Byrne".

Love it or hate it (I actually loved it), JB's DP run is probably the most commercially viable version of the team (along with the original version and Paul Kuppenberg's version) to be marketed to a mainstream non comic book reading audience. If the rumored big budget DP movie is ever made, it will most likely not be based off of either Morrison's,John Acurdi's (sp),Geoff Johns,or Giffen's version of the DP, since those versions of the DP would not have that much mainstream appeal.
