(Any chance anyone has a working link to the aforementioned JB podcasts?  I've never heard them before and would love to take a listen!)

This forum is better than any interview that JB could do,period.

New project announcements
We get to see JB's commissions
We can post new art and stuff we buy (and JB posts some of his)
We can query him directly about his art or writing
ect.,ect.ect.

All available through the magic of the intertubes.

I hope this decision won't exclude the chance of there being some kind of videos (here on the forum) showing JB drawing a page or sketching a character, start to finish  - If this site is to truly be the ultimate John Byrne forum, that is something still missing here. The closest we ever got to that was some short seconds of JB drawing on the Spider-Man dvd and some poorly recorded low quality videos of JB sketching Jasmine and Torch of Liberty on youtube which are no longer online anyway. You can find plenty of that stuff with George Perez, Adam Hughes, a ton of artists, but no John Byrne.

Expecting a market to come to you isn't going to grow that market. If JB isn't going to actively promote a project beyond here, why should anyone else promote it?

This comment reminds me of when I stopped writing letters to fanzines, and people asked why a I was dropping such a "valuable resource". I had just started NEXT MEN, whose sales in excess of 100,000 per issue meant the letter columns (and "A Flame About This High") reached far more readers than any 'zine of the time.

By its mere existence, this website and Forum have literally global potential, far, far greater than any magazine interview. Google "John Byrne" and see what comes up first -- ByrneRobotics or some fanzine interview.

Simple reason for that: I don't think my "process" would be at all informative or helpful to anyone. After 375 years in the Biz, the way I work is very much The Way / Work, and wouldn't be instructive to anyone trying to figure out their own approach.

Shaun, here's Part 1 of Around Comics' 2006 podcast interview with JB.  Here's Part 2.  You may download them, too.

Enjoy!

JB, it goes beyond the instructive aspect you mention, it's a matter of having a record too, I think. Who here doesn't enjoy seeing the available videos with Jack Kirby, John Buscema, John Romita or Joe Kubert and others drawing?

Respect your decision JB.  More than happy with interacting, somewhat, with you here....

It's a very unique opportunity and situation which I enjoy thoroughly.

Thanks.

Fair enough. Pretty amazing that we can come here and interact with the man himself.

JB's post and responses only support my theory that ROG has taken over Byrne Manor and all his work and correspondence are now being carried out by robot.  My only hope is that the actual John Byrne has retired to a quiet island and is not a prisoner in his own basement.

John,

Nobody can deny your individual rights - so when you say 'no mas' to being interviewed then fair enough.  You've probably been interviewed so many times that you dont need another one misrepresenting you.

But what about the interviewer that wont represent you?

And reaching out to potentially new fans of your art who ARENT aware of this site?

 - The other thing I noticed on ebay recently is how many of your items are being listed.  As funny as this might sound ebay is a good barometer for "bankability" or "popularity".  Your new run on Next Men has raised your profile once more - and there is an element of "flavour of the month" about your work.  To us on the forum, you are never NOT flavour of the month, but please think about your decision....you enjoy a raised profile that can reach out to new fans who might influence the future of the comic book industry.

I really hope you dont find my comments disrespectful.  Just an outsider's opinion about your decision.

Speaking of interviews I remember that John hadn't been interviewed for the 'FF the comic'  bonus feature of the first (yeah I know not a masterpiece) FF movie. I've always wondered if Marvel had voluntarily forgotten about John (whose run on the title should be remembered as pure gold, at least to me) or if John had had reasons of his own for avoiding said interview and if so, why. Thank you.
