It totally makes sense for JB not to do interviews. Even after I posted the other day about being excited by an allegedly upcoming interview in DRAW! magazine, I can now comfortably say, who cares? What was I thinking? I can come here and ask the Man himself any question I want AND HE WILL ANSWER ME DIRECTLY!!! What could be better.

"Simple reason for that: I don't think my "process" would be at all informative or helpful to anyone. After 375 years in the Biz, the way I work is very much The Way / Work, and wouldn't be instructive to anyone trying to figure out their own approach".

John, I totally understand that, but if it works only for you I'd like to hear about it .

Anyway, I think if there is one good thing about interviews is that you can answer questions at length, which is something you might not do here since you're interacting with a lot of posters at the same time, and to do so you can't spend a long time answering each question...

What are you saying with The Who comparison, Steve?  I'm not clear on the connection you're making.

••

I don't feel in any way limited in the length of my answers here. If I want to drone on and on and on, I can -- and do!

What this site also offers that no interview really can is the chance to make things ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. Some point that an interviewer might not pick up on, that could use additional detail, can be given that here, since anyone reading can ask direct questions.

The single greatest advantage, tho, is the elimination of transcription errors. When an interview is recorded and then typed up, there are almost always instances where the transcriber hears a word or two different from what I actually said. A "classic" example came when I was discussing DANGER UNLIMITED, before it came out, and the printed page had be saying the new series would be "more acceptable" than NEXT MEN.

What I'd actually said was "more accessible". Rather a dramatic difference, no?

It's true, but I think in interviews you can't simply ignore questions you don't like or you're not in the good mood to answer.
I'm not saying Mr. JB did anything like that: I can't, I don't read anything in the Forum!

For the records, my opinion is that this is a good decision.

I think the most compelling reason to forgo interviews is that they really capture a slice in time -- without context an interview can just as easily be manipulated to seem like it's being conducted in the present.

I'm sure JB has had things he's said decades ago in interviews come back to bite him on the ass.  In many ways giving up interviews is an extension of his policy of being in one place and not faffing about on twitter/facebook/whatever else is the next big thing.

The best things about this forum:
  • Threads expire.  Someone can't resurrect what JB was grousing about in 2006 (unless JB himself wants to)
  • It's a perfect hybrid between a blog and a traditional fan forum.  Communication works both ways here.  Blogs are more one way where you have to wait for the blogger to speak before you can converse with them.  Few fan sites actually let you converse with someone famous and in a lot of cases you can never be sure you are actually talking with the real McCoy.  It's absolutely amazing (and thrilling) knowing that at any time JB can jump into a conversation here and say his .02.
  • Free (as in beer).  Even if it ceased to be such in the future I would still come here.

I posted a question about interviews in another thread and a reader pointed me to this thread.

I absolutely respect that decision, so I'll post my queries here:

We've started a segment on the IndyCast

http://forcecast.net/story/indycast/IndyCast_Episode_131_138 793.asp

regarding Marvel's series of Indiana Jones comic books (I know, I know...).  Would love to do an interview (I know, I know...  :-)   )  about your contributions.

I've read your official response here on the thread, so I get the general idea of what happened.  I'm more interested in:

1)  Where you wanted the series to go, should your run have been extended.
2)  The teaser art for the Sentinel (several questions about that)
3)  The teaser art of Indy sitting in his office (MANY questions about that)
4)  The decision to bring Marion into the series at a later date.
5)  How you would handle an Indy series NOW.
5)  Several other misc. questions.

Any help you can provide will be invaluable.  Based on responses over at the Raven forum, there are a LOT of people interested in your take on this series...not so much the issues with Marvel, but your insight into one of the greatest fictional characters of all time.

Thanks in advance!

That's one of the reasons I have decided not to give any more interviews! Too many old wounds for people to inadvertently rub salt into!!

:-)  Understood.  But I'll be gentle.  Trust me.

Being the 30th anniversary of Raiders, our listeners would LOVE to hear from you on this.

And I REALLY have to get more info on the Sentinel and Indy Office pieces.  Trying to find info is like an Indy quest!!!

At least the back stories on the those two pieces would be fantastic information to have, if you would provide.

There is right now too much focus on interviews and journalism and too little focus on art. Sometimes or very often I shall add, in a TV sofa, we see one intreviewer interviewing another interviewer, last time I saw it was Oprah Winfrey interviewing Jay Leno about if he would have another interviewer Conan O'Barbarian on the show and interview him. So we need more art and less interviews in the world. Because something that has artistic qualities is always better. So more art, comics, drama and stories. And happiness.

Hopefully, those interested in interviews will not press the issue once they
realize JB has made it clear he no longer grants them.

[Edited to remove a pesky "is" that snuck in there...]
