Wolverine along with characters like Galactus, Phantom Stranger, Eternity, Jonah Hex are ones I liked being mysterious. Not knowing everything about them.

I remember when the bone claws were first revealed, and thinking "This
could be interesting, because Wolverine's now effectively powerless". I mean,
bone can't cut though a whole lot to begin with, and the moment small
sharp bones strike anything harder than wood, they'd just shatter (very
painfully!), right?

Nope, he was pretty much just slicing away just as if they were made of
Adamantium. What was the point, then?

Heh As it's made him rich and successful I heard Simon Cowell say he'll have the opposite of that on his gravestone. "he gave the people what they wanted"

What was the point, then?

••

The bone claws are symbolic of a general malaise in superhero comics -- namely that a point is all too often reached where all thought turns inward, and writers and editors stop building and instead begin a process of endless "reinvention". It happened to Superman, with a long period in which the most innovative idea anybody could come up with was to introduce yet ANOTHER Kryptonian leftover, it happened to characters like Batman and the Flash, as the stories became an endless parade of gimmicks -- and, eventually, it happened to Wolverine.

Some of this comes from the way Chris' mind works. Before I joined the team, and when I was still on the book, he was constantly looking for ways to use the character's powers, not all of which made a whole lot of sense. Some slipped thru, such as Storm being able to use her weather manipulating abilities to reshape the unstable molecules of her costume into a variety of outfits. Some did not, such as Banshee being able to creat "sonic holograms", or Kitty being able "phase" thru dimensions.

Problem is, once you start down that path, it can turn into a series of dead ends -- like bone claws.

Holy smokes!!! Easily one of my favorites. The texturing on Wolverine's clothes is perfect.

Soon after X-Men #141 came out, my younger brother, now late, brother went out and found a coat very similar to that one. Seeing it here reminded me of it. Thanks, JB.

You probably won't be too surprised to learn I had a jacket very much like that, back when I drew that story!

My favorite part is the folds in Logan's shirt. All the drapery is very real looking.

I thought so, too! Excellent use of light and shadow.
