JT I feel your pain about the long winded "flatting" process. Can I recommend these 2 free Photoshop filtersThe free versions work fine, although there is no free version for 64bit CS4 and up which is a bit of a pain.
They're really helped me speed up my creation of "flats". For anyone interested, my process using these filters is:
1. Scan/adjust black and white linework 2. Make copy of this linework to a new file (so I now have 2) 3. On one of the files use Image>Adjustments> Threshold to convert this into a hard black and white image with no greys. Try to aim for nice thick lines with no gaps. 4. Use the "Multifill" filter. This assigns a random colour to each white area of the image. 5. Use the "Flatten" filter to remove the black areas. You now have what looks like a mosaic of psychedelic colours 6. Copy the linework from your other file and paste it over the colour file in a new multiply layer. 7. Select the colour layer and bucket-fill the colour areas with the colours you'd actually like to be there. NB: Make sure that the "Anti-alias" check box is turned off otherwise you could end up with weird fringing.
I know this sounds like quite a long winded process but I've got it down to about 10 minutes which really beats the hours of masking and filling I had to do previously. Hope this is of some use.
