I still feel exactly as you did, and I wish I had gotten over that. When I was a teen I discovered that I had a good knack for being able to faithfully reproduce in pencil what was in front of me by line of sight - but I was too hard on myself, thinking that being able to do that is no big deal, since it seemed almost too easy to me. Meanwhile, my skills greatly improved after devouring HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY.

When I was in high school, I was in friendly competition with another guy with similar aspirations, and I thought that in some areas I drew better than him. I ended up on a different career path. But, In the late nineties, I picked up an issue of DEADPOOL and saw his name in the credits. Really made me wonder about the path not taken!

When was your big reading catch-up to learn about Adams, Buscema, and other greats?

••

When John Mansfield saw my comic and contacted me to see if I was interested in pursuing a career, he also introduced me to all that had happened since my last exposure to American comics. This included Neal and Big John, plus a flock of European artists.

There were also reintroductions to the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Gil Kane.
