I did not buy Secret Wars at the time it came out. After hearing great things
about it for 30 years, I saw a used TPB and bought it.

It certainly plays better to 10-12 year olds.

If ever a series was released to kickstart an action figure revolution, Secret Wars was it...

The toys were disappointing though!

I liked them at the time, but looking back I'm not sure why. Dock Ocks tentacles fell off in no time, Magneto had no cloak, Doom had no cloak, Wolverine's claws fitted very loosely. Iron Man was great though and Captain America was pretty good... though messing the shield up was unforgiveable.

Doom had no cloak….

And had Iron Man’s arms and legs! For “economic reasons” according to Shooter.

Bad enough, but that he was drawn that way in the series was inexcusable. Way to protect the brand!

JB, if given carte blanche, would a project like this involving the whole
“universe” of characters together have interested you at all?

Making my way thru MoS. JB, did you have everything plotted out ahead
enough that the “villain” in the Phantom Stranger story would end up the
“villain/savior” of the GLC story?

Also, the ADVENTURES issues are really quite different. Both in what I was
expecting and in tone from the Byrne-written titles. Marv is still scripting at
this point and his Clark/Superman seems almost a different character. And
the introduction of Cat Grant seems at odds with how you were presenting
romantic feelings for Lois and Wonder Woman. Did you have anything to do
with Cat becoming a character? Any particular feelings one way or the other
towards the character?

Commenting on that villains pages posted of Zeck's art...

Where are all the reflections of the characters on that floor?  They look like they are floating!  Sloppy.

Never liked Secret Wars, not one iota.  Never liked Zeck either.

Oh, let’s not. There are many conventions in comics that have evolved mostly out of expediency. To make things more clear, or to speed things up. I myself, for instance, rarely draw shadows.

Funny how we can look at the same thing and see it differently. I posted that image as an example of how good I think Zeck's art was. I think he's brilliant!

Mike Zeck has done some great work, Punisher, Batman covers, and I have enjoyed his work since Master of Kung-Fu with his own "Terry Austin" in Gene Day as his inker.
