We had to put our Yorkie, Parker, down three weeks ago. We think she was around 14 and she was at the point she couldn’t walk or stand very well with her back legs. We took her to the vet for a quality of life visit and it was determined she had some pretty significant nerve damage. So we decided it was best for her if we went ahead said goodbye. I absolutely lost it. I knew in my heart what was going to happen when we scheduled the visit but it still devastated me. I miss her terribly. We got her and her sister, a mini poodle named Snowball, at the same time and we had to say goodbye to her last summer. There’s still a big hole from their leaving. The boy dogs, Oliver and Eddie, now sometimes come to the couch when we’re watching TV and lay where the girls used to lay. But it’s not the same. I told my wife after these two are gone, I’m finished. I can’t go thru that any more.

Brian, I agree. One thing a lot of people tend to ask after my doggie passed is if I'm getting another dog. I can't ever see putting myself through that kind of devastation again.

My French Bulldog that I got with an ex-partner died 3 years ago, and it was heartbreaking. He was only 6, and was one of those dogs that couldn’t keep his nose out of anything and ate some poisonous berries in her back garden. It ended up we had to put him down rather than subject him to a slow and painful end.
It was the right guy thing to do yet I’ll never forget looking in to his eyes before he passed.
It was a weird situation that even though we had been together and loved together for 4 years, when we split we still stayed friends and shared the dog between us.

So sorry for your loss Craig, a lot of people don't understand the loss of a pet brings the same grief as the loss of a human loved one. When previous dogs died, i threw myself into work, and had to keep sneaking off to the toilets for a cry. Am currently supporting my cousin who lives a distance away after the loss of her beloved dog Milly. She is very depressed. Our current rescue dog, we have had nearly 7 years, and as he was between 3 and 5 when we got him he's potentially 12, he's got very grey in the last couple of years but is still fit and active, but i know when the time comes, it will break our hearts. I have had a discussion with my wife that now were are in our 60's, our next rescue dog may be our last.

Thanks for the lovely comments, guys.
I'm not the sort of person to make announcements on Facebook for this type of thing (don't use social media at all, actually). I remembered this thread and it felt a bit like therapy to mention it here, among like-minded people on the JBF.
I agree that there is generally a standard reaction for people to ask if you will get another dog (I don't blame them, it seems to be the go-to question). For me, it seems to trivialise the life of your beloved pet, as if they were simply a possession. We will not get another dog until I retire in around three years' time.
Ben's passing was heightened by the fact that he used to go to the office with me every day, sleeping beside my desk. That meant that the six people that I worked with, who all loved him, were affected too.

No worries Craig, it often helps to talk about such things with thise who get it. I never thought it trivialises the life of a deceased pet to get another. I look at it as honouring the memory of that pet by giving a new rescue dog the chance of a forever home. Although i must admit, my wife has been the driving force in starting the search for a new one each time.

My condolences to your family for this loss.
My wife has a habit of adopting dogs with extreme to severe medical needs so this happens in our life more than is comfortable and it's always an enormous loss because they are in our hearts so deeply.

Sincerest condolences, I've had 6 dogs grace my life to date. They were all my best friends and their loss still hurts but having them in my life was a gift. I very recently had to put down my 10 year old black cat Pete. a true tragedy as he developed a very invasive cancer from a canine rabies vaccine... That was truly painful and watching my 16 year old daughter breakdown as a result hurt even more. They are not possessions and cannot be replaced but Jr. the new black cat kitten that we gave a home to sure helps with the pain and I'm sure is better off vs being in the shelter...

Well said Harry , and yes , so many dogs and cats would benefit greatly if they could be adopted into a loving home instead of being in a shelter or worse , on the street . Losing a pet is gut wrenching as they are family but I believe if you can adopt again , do it .
