He obviously paid no attention to the oath he took when taking office.
(Yes, I realize he doesn’t care about any oaths or upholding anything other than his own interests.)

There is so much dumb in that thread it’s hard to see which is the most stupid. ‘I set the tariff’? ‘100% tariff on movies produced outside the USA’? How would that even work? Increased ticket prices? What about straight to streaming movies?
Guy’s an idiot.

Rich, if only...
It's sad to watch any country rip itself apart from a distance. It must be demoralising to be living within it.

@James: if you had to track its course, to what would you ascribe the pull to Brexit and its characters like Farage in and the larger nationalist stream that's been there at least since the mid-60s?

Two factors really Dave. The first, and probably the most controversial answer, is racism. Fighting against things like ‘the Polish plumber’ and the ability of Europeans to ‘come over here and take our jobs’.
The second is the relentless lies peddled by our press over decades. Lies about European laws (the straight banana, the sausage, how evil the ECHR is, etc etc etc). The European Commission once had a webpage dedicated to the lies that had been peddled by the UK press, addressing each one individually and responding with what the actual situation was. It ran to hundreds of entries. We had multiple right wing papers (The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Express etc) writing lies on a daily basis, and I do mean daily .Farage was able to capitalise on that, by peddling further lies and, to be honest, using a lot of Nazi party imagery, such as the queue of people, ‘foreigners’ waiting to take YOUR jobs. He kept at it, gaining popularity, little by little, until he had his moment, which again was full of lies - look up the famous £350 million a day bus quote - which he rescinded the day after the referendum.
You then had Dominic Cummings enter the fray at the Brexit vote, and he came up with the slogan ‘Take back control’, which ticked every box, in a single sentence. Once that took hold, that was it for the UK in the EU.

@James: thanks. I'm surprised that naming racism as part of the cause would be in any way controversial, as the UK seems to have had prominent political names (Enoch Powell primary among them) who made white supremacism a primary part of their platform. Or is it just controversial to say so because, just like here in the states, the dog whistlers always deny it?

You hit the nail in the head. Garage will argue till he’s blue in the face that he’s not racist. And on a one on one basis, he may well not be. But on a collective basis, he’s as racist as the day is long.
