Big fan of 163 too, Craig; sort of the 1970s version of DD#7. As a kid it
helped crystallize the difference I saw between DC and Marvel in those
days. While DC had Batman who was normal-powered but with that chess
club brain it seemed to me a lot of their first tier heroes were just too damn
powerful from Wonder Woman to Green Lantern to Superman. Of course
there were exceptions but Marvel’s heroes’ problems just seemed more
relatable to me. Normal powered Spidey, Conan (basically a great fighter
but he lost plenty), Captain America (although super soldiered up he was
still vulnerable to a good punch) and DD 163 were what started to convert
me away from DC (fun but increasingly unrelatble) to Marvel.

One of the first Spider-Man stories that I read was ASM #14 in the Marvel Treasury Edition.  I think it depicts him the way I prefer -

Nearly overwhelmed by numbers when taking on the Enforcers, but clearly stronger, but still not so strong that they aren't a threat to him -

And later that issue, clearly not anywhere near the strength level of the Hulk (or presumably any of Marvel's other big boys - Thor, Hercules, the Thing or Namor) -

Early on they probably had him at about the same level as Giant-Man, but he was still having trouble with characters like the Kingpin and Man Mountain Marko.

What made Spider-Man interesting to me as a kid was how he wasn't the most powerful but he could think his way out of situations even when his opponent was more powerful (the Rhino, John Jameson in the Jupiter suit, etc.)

I also recall Spider-Man catching colds and being sick enough that his powers were affected. Oddly enough, this common man frailty added to the character’s appeal.

Not only that, Wallace, but he used to get injured fairly frequently too. Sprained shoulders, concussions etc., the effects of which would often linger for multiple issues. I really think something was lost when creators abandoned this aspect of his characterization. In fact--while I'm sure there are other instances that aren't coming immediately to mind--the only more modern instance I can think of was the time he sustained both a shoulder sprain and a concussion while fighting the Sinister Syndicate at the Coney Island amusement park.
I wonder if the injuries and illnesses having fallen out of favor was product of the character being represented in multiple titles, and a reluctance to tie other creators to a storyline presented in one title. While unfortunate, it would certainly be understandable if that were the reason.
