Joe Dante, famous director and film nut, had a lucky night on the old RKO lot a few years ago and the result is a pretty cool story and an auction that, I hope, keeps him in the black for a long time.
Long story short, Joe owns a very famous sled that is now up for auction. It has been his ever since he found it one night on the way home from a day of shooting "The Explorers."It's kind of the ultimate grail-hunting story.

Three sleds were used. One, of course, was burned.

Joe got the remaining pine wood version.
There is a 4th which may have been created for an in-joke on a Universal movie the folllowing year.
Spielberg owns one which may be this 4th one.

Do any of the existing sleds have the metal rails left on them?
