I thought about this recently after seeing a few news stories where members of the public had been mildly inconvenienced, often due to their own failings and they claimed to be traumatised, anxious or literally shaking.

These people are just...soft, Bill. Mentally. Physically. Emotionally. It's a trend, and I don't know how it changes, short of living through the deprivations and trauma of a world war, which of course is not ideal, to put it mildly.

Recently I have noticed a tendency among some to deny the whole “blitz spirit”, the wartime resolve of the British people to, well, keep calm and soldier on. Why this trend? I see it as part of our apparent need to tear down authority. There are people who simply do not like the idea that there are some who are better than them. I missed the Second World War by five years, but it was still a presence in the lives of most adults I knew. There was a sense of pride of accomplishment that had been born in those six (yes, six) years that was palpable even a decade later.

I hope we can all remain calm in light of current events.
Not looking to fan any flames... just miss decent conversations here on how we all feel about current events that effect our lives.... emotionally & mentality.

Around 13 months ago, I made a concerted effort to stop paying attention. I deleted news apps, got rid of social media, and did pretty much everything I could think of to stop paying attention. It seems that a shocking segment of the population does this successfully.
I have to say, it’s mostly paid off. I still tend to hear snippets, usually related to the “biggest” disasters, but I’m no longer drowning in the noise. My outlook is that all I can do about anything is be the best version of myself possible, someone who models kindness and positivity. But I can’t change what’s happening, so all I can do by having intimate, current knowledge is be miserable. And I’d rather try to be happy.

In the 70's here in the U.K. due to strikes and other industrial action we had scheduled power cuts and a 3 day working week. We didn't crawl into a ball and cry, we got on with it, neighbours who had gas cookers and fires taking in those who were all electric for those hours, cooking for them, playing games by candlelight etc. To me, that was a hint of The Blitz spirit. Nowadays a few hours without tv and internet would see a lot of the young have a meltdown.
