I had a $3 a week allowance (maybe raised to $5 at some point) and I did a few odd jobs, but somehow I could buy almost everything DC and Marvel published!  (Except I didn't really care about westerns or war.)

Now, I guess buying all the super-hero stuff from those two companies would cost at least $400 a month!  I guess it's doable--but who's doing it?

I used to get a dollar a week when I was 14. One week I bought six issues all at once—-and my mother made me return half of them!

I got $2 a week and when I started buying comics they cost 25 cents so I was spending at least half of it on comics.

For instance in August, 1974, at age 11, I bought -

Week 1 - Captain America #179 - 25¢
Week 2 - Avengers #129, Marvel Two-in-One #6, Marvel's Greatest Comics #53 - 75¢
Week 3 - Captain Marvel #35, Defenders #17, Giant-Size Fantastric Four #3, Marvel Triple Action #22 - $1.25
Week 4 - Fantastic Four #152, Giant-Size Avengers #2, Iron Man #71 - #1.00

Total $3.25 - So from the beginning I was already buying three or four comics a week.

A year later in August, 1975 -

Week 1 - Daredevil #127, Giant-Size X-Men #2, Invaders #3 - $1
Week 2 - Amazing Spider-Man #150, Captain America #191, Iron Fist #1 (1st JB purchase!), Marvel Two-in-One #12 - $1
Week 3 - Avengers #141, Defenders #29, Incredible Hulk #193, Jungle Action #18, Marvel Triple Action #26 - $1.25
Week 4 - Captain Marvel #41, Fantastic Four #164, Iron Man #80, Marvel Team-Up #39 - $1.00

Total - $4.25

Looking back now, it's apparent that I was reading a particular type of comic from early on.  I was also picking up the occasional Marvel Treasury Edition, which was $1.50 and I'm guessing that was my entire purchase for the week (I bought one other comic that came out the week the Spider-Man Treasury Edition came out, and 2 other comics that came out the week the Fantastic Four Treasury came out).

JB, did you draw the corner box (in addition to the cover art) for Web of Spider-Man #3?
