It really not a big change. Most mail is already delivered to community boxes.

I've heard some push back against the complaints that Canada Post is losing money, because they're not *meant* to make a profit. OK, sure, but I'm pretty sure that by any measure losing $10,000,000 A DAY is on the unacceptable end of things.

Yeah, I've heard some (now forgotten) numbers on the massive amount of redundant/duplicate management positions. Way, WAY over the top.

On one hand, it’s offensive to denigrate a service for not being profitable, because a service is infrastructure, not industry. On the other hand, all services need to be as efficient as possible. If it’s true that there’s a lot of unnecessary high paying managerial and executive positions, then it’s offensive that the best solution being acted upon is to reduce the reach of that service while punishing those who rely on it.

I do remember during the 90s, when the US Postal Service spent millions of dollars on a new logo, which of course had to be replaced on every mailbox across the entire country. Why?? Did they expect someone to think "I've had this letter sitting in my pocket for years but you know, that new logo looks mighty perty, I think I'll finally mail this thing!"

When the CEO makes WAY more money than the Prime Minister of the country and is running a corporation that has lost billions over the last 4-6 years during a parcel boom blaming the workers who are out there doing the job seems absolutely pathetic.
Canada Post has something like 15 VPs. They removed 50 manager positions in Ontario earlier this year and said it didn't affect operations. Those are six figure a year jobs.
This is corporate greed on the backs of working class people. And the government of Canada is enabling it.
It's clear Canada Post and mail in general needs to change. But the people in charge need to face consequences for their actions. Blaming the union doesn't help. And that seems to be a main talking point in all the coverage of this.

I'm far from an expert on this, but as I understand it Canada Post is a Crown operation, but unlilke many other Crown corporations, it is not taxpayer funder -- it needs to sustain itself through its own profits. The company lost $748m before tax in 2023. In 2022 it lost $548. How is this corporate greed and how is the government of Canada enabling it?
Evidently it is spending much more running itself than it is taking in revenue. That its market share in deliveries has been dropping shows that the problem primarily is on the competing for business side rather than on the costs side. I have no doubt it has bloat and ineffiencies on the operations side, as this tends to be true for almost all government jobs, but if you were to bullet point its issues, I would say they are: 1. Doesn't run 7 days a week when its competitors do 2. Has unions that strike a lot when its competitors never strike 3. Can't pick and choose where it delivers, when its competitors can make efficiency calls about the economic ways to deliver to remote areas (if at all).
Something is clearly rotten in the state of Denmark when that much money is being lost, but I'm not sure I'd ascribe those losses to corporate greed as such.

You're quite right, Steve. CP is a hot mess (I was just venting at a really poor run of dealings with Royal Mail).
