I know you dont want to feed ’fans’ with ’better that this or that’ - but is there a book I could point a new reader to, where I can say this is the right place to start to get aqainted with your stories and get ’on the right track’ from the beginning, so to speak.

Looking back, I find that I really enjoyed being there from (almost) the beginning with DOOMSDAY+1 and then watching this great new artist taking over the somewhat lackluster MARVEL TEAM-UP, and (though I loved the Cockrum issues) X-MEN went from good to great during his time. (Somehow, I missed the IRON FIST run at the time.) AVENGERS was great and CAPTAIN AMERICA was better. It was wonderful to see him come out of the gate as a really good writer on FF and to watch him try new things as an artist and a writer with NAMOR and SHE-HULK. And the winners just kept on coming! He's probably personally responsible for at least ten percent of my overall comic book enjoyment!
So, my first answer was (if you can) to read all of JB's stuff in order! My second answer (if you need to jump around)--SHE-HULK!

There's a lot of magic in FF 232 and the following.

I'd recommend JB's BATMAN & CAPTAIN AMERICA. That's sure to whet the appetite of any true lover of quality comics!

It is a difficult one. For me it would have to be FF 232 because that showed just how of a writer JB was. We knew he was an artist, but didn’t realise his writing skills until then (or at least, I didn’t, because I didn’t realise just how much X-Men plots were by JB).

I'd suggest 'The Man With the Power' and the follow-up Ego issue. The first just has a great sci-fi hook and also allows the reader to view the FF from something of a street-level outsider POV, while the Ego story is just a great example of the team's individual and group strengths. The 'Man/Ego' two-parter also works beautifully because the first half has next to nothing to do with wider Marvel continuity, while the Ego story shows just how cool the deep end of the Marvel pool is.
And of course, the first twelve issues of Alpha Flight, which is one of the best sustained realistic portrayal of superheroes just kinda gallumphing through life - about the strongest iteration of the Lee 'real world problems' kind of writing.

I would give a new reader NEXT MEN - starting with the original Legend/Dark Horse run and right into the IDW published conclusion of the original story and NEXT MEN: AFTERMATH. It's JB's masterpiece and a thrilling read, especially for a new reader.
