Like Evan my basement floor has to be completely replaced because it wasn't dug low enough and heaves with every freeze thaw cycle, and this year's freeze thaw has been a series of massive swings

East York (a borough of Toronto for those who are unaware) is notorious for basement flooding due to the soil conditions I described previously, to the point where basements can’t be insured against it. When we did our home reno, and the foundation had been laid bare, I asked our construction guy how everything was looking. He assured me it was fine -then applied the drywall ahead of a storm that resulted in severe flooding down there. On top of the $20k we had to unexpectedly pay to waterproof the foundation, we had to rip up and replace $5k worth of fresh drywall. I’m still salty about that.

I went to Quebec City in late November a little over 10 years ago. And the St Lawrence River was a scary mess of craggy ice. And it was COLD. And I had a very similar thought process to what you're expressing here. How the hell did they get by? It must have been so miserable.

And the snow in Central Jersey JUST finally started melting after the snow and deep freeze nearly a month ago.
I'm spending the weekend in Philadelphia, and dreading the car drive home. Will probably just head back tomorrow after hotel checkout before it gets really bad, though that wasn't the original plan.

Reminds me of the time in the late Seventies when I drove from Calgary to Edmonton, about 120 miles, to visit a friend from art college. It was intended to be a day trip, but just as I was about to head home, a massive blizzard engulfed the city. “You’re not going anywhere in this!” said my friend. So I spent the night on her couch. Next morning, bright and early, I headed south—and caught up to the blizzard heading in the same direction. I pushed thru—a pretty terrifying experience, but I didn’t fancy freezing to death by the side of the road. I broke out of the storm a few miles from Calgary and reached my apartment just as the snow started falling. So I got the same blizzard three times in a row!

Which reminds me of the time I was a student at the University of Fredonia in Western NY State, about two hours away from my mom's house where I grew up. I drove home on weekends for laundry and because I worked at a local radio station.
I drove back to school in a blizzard that was so rough I spent much of the trip driving around 20-25mph in my old, tiny 1984 Toyota Corolla, because I had a final exam the next morning. When I spoke to the teacher about it, she said that if I hadn't made it back, she wouldn't have let me make up the test at a later date, which is utterly insane to me.
I've driven through some bad weather, growing up in the snowbelt south of Lake Ontario. If that one wasn't the worst, it's in the top 3.

After Thanksgiving dinner with friends, a while back, I headed home as snow was starting to fall. By the time I reached the highway (I-95) it was a full scale blizzard. The trip, normally about 20 minutes, took 4 hours—and I was pretty much blind most of the way. That was maybe 30 years ago. Funny to look back and realize what little attention we paid to the weather. No apps!

Speaking of (over) 30 years ago, I was going to college in Albany. The winters were definitely worse up there back then. There were at least a few nights per year where the temperatures got to -10 through -20 F at night without windchill. I actually remember driving along the Hudson River up there and saw kids walking across it!
Anyway, I remember a major early-April snowstorm happening in 1994. I was planning on going back down to NYC that weekend for a ComicCon that you were attending so my reason for going was to meet you. But then the storm hit, and I didn't want to risk the drive, plus I figured there was a chance that you would have cancelled due to the weather.
Question - do you remember if you actually went? I thought that I saw a photo of you and Chris Claremont sharing a table that was said to be from that Con, but I could be mistaken.
